About Isla

I am a dedicated chess tutor with 7 years of experience teaching students from school to college. Over the years, I have successfully guided around 250 students, helping them improve their understanding of chess, sharpen their strategic thinking, and develop a love for the game. My teaching philosophy is centred on making chess both enjoyable and intellectually rewarding. I focus on building strong foundations in openings, middle-game tactics, endgame strategies, and pattern recognition while encouraging creativity and independent thinking.

I use real-life examples, case studies from famous games, and practical exercises to make lessons engaging and relatable. Communication and flexibility are key in my approach, allowing me to adapt each lesson to the individual needs and goals of my students. I emphasise integrity, sportsmanship, and critical reflection, helping students grow not just as players but as thoughtful thinkers.

Throughout my career, I have guided students in school and inter-college tournaments, with several achieving top positions and improved ratings under my mentorship. I also focus on mental preparation, concentration, and decision-making skills that benefit students beyond chess.

My aim is to create a supportive learning environment where students feel confident to ask questions, try new strategies, and learn from mistakes. Whether a beginner wanting to understand the basics or an advanced player preparing for competitive play, I help each student reach their full potential. I believe that with guidance, practice, and encouragement, every student can enjoy chess and achieve success in both their skills and confidence.

About the lesson

My teaching approach to chess focuses on developing strategic thinking, tactical awareness, and a deep understanding of the game while keeping learning engaging and practical. I incorporate real-life examples and case studies from famous games to illustrate key concepts, helping students see how strategies work in actual play. Lessons cover openings, middle-game tactics, endgame techniques, and positional understanding, as well as pattern recognition and calculation skills. I emphasise the importance of mental discipline, patience, and focus, guiding students to think several moves ahead and anticipate their opponent’s strategies.

Communication is central to my tutoring style. I ensure that ideas are explained clearly and that students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring different approaches, and discussing alternative moves. Flexibility allows me to tailor each lesson to a student’s goals, whether they are a beginner learning the basics, an intermediate player refining tactics, or an advanced student preparing for tournaments. Creativity is encouraged through problem-solving exercises, puzzles, and scenario-based challenges, allowing students to develop their own style and innovative strategies.

Integrity in learning is a priority; I teach students to play honestly, respect opponents, and reflect critically on their games. I also include guidance on time management, psychological preparation, and post-game analysis to help students improve steadily. My goal is to make chess not only a game of skill but also a rewarding journey of intellectual growth and confidence-building. With consistent practice, mentorship, and strategic guidance, students develop both their chess abilities and a love for the game.
