About Jonas

For over a decade I've been performing professionally with a long list of acts including Tiger Lillies, Michael Rosen, Ceri James, Hot Swing Boheme, Jowe Head, Psychoyogi and Pete Maas. I love how diverse cultures, disciplines and experiences are linked by music, which has enriched my life. Currently I play with swing fusion/classical orchestra Perfect Stranger and teach at David Game College.

Before my Bachelor's Honours degree at DrumTech/London College of Music (now BIMM), I was an actor and self-taught musician/composer. I've also worked as a singer in party and wedding engagements. I've produced and played on albums for Jowe Head, Gardyloo Spew, and as a composer played all the instruments on a new album by Anthony Sobati.

In the current lessons I sometimes use bass guitar to help the student develop ensemble skills. I learned my musical voice from experimentation, composition and perspiration. Dancing has helped me discover it too.

My current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) is from October 2022.

We learn all these technical skills to find our own voice, rather than conform to a type.
I want you to be motivated to teach yourself and research as I do. I've trained students who went on to complete grades and do professional work. In over 10 years of tutoring, I was an amanuensis in universities across London for students with learning difficulties, tutoring excluded students in north London, and worked in formal classroom settings as a teaching assistant.

I have new training in supporting students with dyslexia and related difficulties and more recently, Safeguarding.

About the lesson

On one side of the spectrum, drumming is a creative art, and on the other, a practical craft. I'll take you through the importance of both in the following ways:
*Listening to you continuously and understanding what you want to achieve
*Helping you identify and play material progressing from your level, beginner to advanced
*Early foundations of good technique, ergonomics and comfort
*Knowledge of the relevant anatomy of movement and how to maintain a healthy body while playing throughout your life
*A written guide to what we did for every lesson
*Showing you how to listen better, your role in the music, and it's separate elements
*Regularly hearing new material, but also better understanding music you know and love
*Giving you tools to teach yourself, and play by ear as I did
*Tried and tested practice methods: quality over quantity, breaking parts into smaller parts and levels of learning
*Celebrating successes, helping you appreciate your progress in small and greater steps
*A set of aspects to improve practice time through self-awareness
*Choosing assessment pieces with you, to work towards for performance workshop with university level feedback criteria
*Advice on your set up, maintaining instruments and how to save money doing it

As a composer, I regularly practice the value in creating new parts that serve the music. This is similar in practice to learning by small steps of achievement by the pieces you will learn.
