In my experience, the one best approach to improving one's mathematical skill is by posing and solving many, many problems. Mathematics is like writing, art, or music: one learns by doing, practicing repetitively, over and over, until mastery is achieved. Some may say this "rote" manner of education is outdated and ineffective, that one must "grasp the concept" before doing the work, as if one could simply download the entire body of mathematical knowledge into one's brain like Neo in "The Matrix." The truth is that real mathematics doesn't work that way! Professional mathematicians must grind out problem after problem in order to infer patterns and general properties, and then pose and prove (or disprove) theorems thoroughly and rigorously in order to "grasp the concept."
