About TAO

I am a native Mandarin speaker, an experienced Chinese language teacher, and currently a master's student in literature at Université Paris 8.

My academic journey has taken me from China to France, including studies at Peking University, with a particular focus on language, literature and the humanities.

For the past five years, I have taught Chinese in Chinese schools, working with numerous students of different ages and linguistic backgrounds. Alongside this experience, I have developed a strong interest in linguistics, phonetics and language pedagogy, including specialized academic training in speech sounds and pronunciation.

Having studied French language and literature extensively, I am particularly interested in the differences between Chinese and European languages, and in how these differences can help us find better ways to teach and learn.

I am also passionate about philosophy, classical music and Chinese cultural history. These interests frequently find their way into my teaching, especially when a particular character, expression or literary reference offers an opportunity to understand something about Chinese thought and culture.

Over the years, teaching has convinced me that a good explanation at the right moment is often more valuable than hours of mechanical repetition.

One of the most rewarding moments for me is seeing a student suddenly understand something that seemed completely unfamiliar or impossible just a few minutes earlier.

Whether you are discovering Mandarin for the first time, returning to it after a break, or aiming for a high level of linguistic proficiency, I would be delighted to share both my experience as a teacher and my enthusiasm for the Chinese language.

I offer lessons in English, French or Mandarin, depending on your level and preferences.

I have been teaching Mandarin in Chinese schools for five years, working with students of different ages, backgrounds and proficiency levels. My approach draws on this teaching experience, my academic background in linguistics and Chinese literature, and my specialised training in phonetics.

Rather than relying on mechanical repetition and memorisation, I want my students to understand the underlying logic of the language. The way I teach naturally changes according to their level and objectives.

For beginners: Discovering the logic behind Chinese

I particularly enjoy introducing Chinese through vivid stories, historical anecdotes and examples that make seemingly complicated concepts surprisingly intuitive.

We explore the pictographic origins of Chinese characters, how their forms have evolved, and the principles behind their construction. I also explain how characters combine to form words, helping students recognise patterns instead of treating every new character as an isolated symbol to memorise.

Pronunciation is another important part of my teaching. Drawing on my training in phonetics, I use practical articulatory techniques to help students overcome some of the most challenging aspects of Mandarin, particularly the sounds zh, ch, sh and the distinctions between the four tones.

My aim is not simply to have students imitate my pronunciation, but to help them understand exactly how these sounds are produced, how to hear the differences, and how to reproduce them confidently.

For intermediate learners: Understanding the language beyond its grammar

At this stage, we move beyond basic sentence structures and explore the mechanisms of Chinese word formation, vocabulary and expression in greater depth.

Many Chinese words and expressions are closely connected to the country's history, literature and cultural traditions. Understanding these connections can reveal why certain words are constructed as they are, how their meanings have developed, and why they are used in particular contexts.

I enjoy bringing these cultural and historical dimensions into my lessons, not merely as interesting anecdotes, but as useful tools for understanding and remembering the language.

Alongside this, we work on conversational fluency, reading authentic materials, expanding vocabulary and developing more accurate and natural written expression.

For advanced learners: Developing precision, fluency and a deeper command of Chinese

My academic background in linguistics and literature, combined with my knowledge of Chinese history and culture and my formal training in phonetics, allows me to work with students seeking a more sophisticated command of Mandarin.

Depending on your objectives, our lessons can focus on HSK examination preparation, academic or professional Chinese, or developing the fluency and precision associated with highly proficient speakers.

We can explore advanced pronunciation and prosody, differences in register, subtle distinctions between near-synonyms, idiomatic expressions, argumentative writing and the stylistic conventions of different types of texts.

I also provide detailed feedback on spoken and written Chinese, helping students identify not only grammatical errors but also expressions that may be technically correct yet unnatural to a native speaker.

My approach

What matters most to me is helping students understand why Chinese works the way it does.

A character becomes easier to remember when you understand how it is constructed. A difficult sound becomes easier to pronounce when you understand how it is articulated. And an unfamiliar expression becomes much more intuitive when you discover the cultural or historical context behind it.

This is the kind of understanding I try to develop in every lesson
