I view music production as a tool to express ones inner creativity and artistic potential. Other tutors may spend hours informing you of the theory behind music production tools such as Reverbs, Compressors and Equalizers. While this is all very important, music does not exist without artistic intent, and i aim to inspire all my students to be guided by their creativity and use the tools available to them to achieve their own artistic visions.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I have always had a deep emotional connection to music, even as a young child my first memories are of the first songs I was introduced to. The first song i every remember hearing is 'California Dreaming' by The Mamas and The Papas. When I was 7, I got a guitar for Christmas as my grandfather was a musician in a show band in the 60's and he wanted to introduce me to the prospect of playing an instrument early.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I am constantly listening to music on loop, i dont think it would ever drive me crazy, however recently the music I listen to most is Hip-Hop, Electronic and Alternative.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I think the biggest challenge with learning music is figuring out what you want to do with that skill. I could tell you how difficult it is to play certain types of songs, or use certain techniques, but the reality is that once you know how to do that, and you have passed the threshold for what you can call an adequate musician, the biggest challenge is what you do next. It is something that cannot be taught and requires you to be brutally honest with yourself about who you are and what your calling is within music.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

It differs from person to person; however, I think that generally Guitar is difficult because there is a period of moderate discomfort in the fingers for beginners before their fingers develop calluses.
  • What are your keys to success?

Hard work and dedication. Thats all there is to it. I personally believe that while some people pick things up better than others, the concept of 'talent' is outdated and frankly offensive to the people who spend years putting in hard work to achieve their goal.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

James Blake, Kanye West, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). They are three of my favourite musicians and they have all worked together in one way or another so I feel their chemistry would be very strong, and I could learn a lot from them.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

One of my mentors in music taught me that there isn't a lot to learn to become a musician, it just takes a long time to learn it. It's something that I think about often. For me not only does it bring comfort as it made the prospect of being a musician realistic, but it also means that even when I think I know a lot, compared to what I will know in 20 years from now it isn't much at all
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Many tutors focus on the more 'athletic' aspect of musicianship, i.e. coaching you to become better at a skill, whether it is guitar playing, production, or theory. My calling is to teach my pupils to use these skills in unique and creative ways. It is not enough to know everything there is to know about music if you don't know how to turn that into a career, if that is what you one day dream of doing. Music is an all-encompassing concept and requires more than ability to succeed, that where I come in.
