About Shanshan

I'm an award-winning media professional, working as a photographer and filmmaker with an international media. I have trained students from all over the world, including China, Syria, Pakistan and the UK.

My works have been used by big news agencies and appeared on international media. I work in both worlds of news and art - I recently exhibited my latest multimedia work at 2019 Shanghai Biennale. I started taking photos since the age of 12, and won my first photography prize at the age of 15, and had my first group exhibition at a national contemporary museum in Shanghai.

Photography is not only my job but also part of my way of life.

Total beginners or anyone who wants to improve their skills are welcome.
With me, taking photos will not only will be fun but also learn to make it your second nature.

I encourage hands-on practice and use examples to improve the students' skills in photography and critical thinking in working in media. I have taught total beginners and more experienced students, and I will cater my lessons to different needs and interests.

An sit-down class (1-hour class) usually breaks down into three parts: 1) I will give students tasks before the lessons (or from last lesson) and we will go over their works to reflect on the techniques and thinking involved. 2) I will give constructive lessons on one aspect of photography - such as composition, depth of field, aperture, colour balance or working with natural light. You will also learn about your cameras if you are a total beginner. 3) We will go over some important tips for working in photography, or learn about a specific photographer's work.

A practice+sit-down class (2-hour class) usually first takes place outdoor for a specific task. I will encourage the students to work with their peers to learn different approaches. We will sit down afterwards to go over the photos - it will include all the elements of a sit-down class but the class will last at least 2 hours.

During my lessons, I will also cover many important aspects that can fast-track your career in freelancing, including ethics, tips for working in the field, as well as tips on health and safety (I do recommend any freelance photographers to complete Hostile Environment Training from qualified companies, and I can recommend some).

You will need to spend some time out of the class to take some photos to go over the techniques learnt and we will go over the homework in the next class.

I also believe photography is not just about techniques, it's also about learning about oneself, finding one's own unique approach to creation and storytelling.

An sit-down lesson is usually 1 hour. A practic+sit-down lesson is usually 2 hours. Both can be one-to-one or in groups.

The students will need to bring a digital camera and all the necessary accessaries - if they want to learn take photos with their iPhones or new fancy phones, that's also cool.

If any other expenses occur, the tutor will be specified before the classes - which will be rare.
