About Ben
Music has been my lifelong passion, rooted in the moment I discovered Für Elise and taught myself to play it on my aunt's electric piano as a child. Now, as an experienced music educator, my mission is to help you pursue your musical aspirations in a way that feels personal and genuine.
I remember the excitement of picking up the trombone for the first time in 6th grade band. The sounds I could create left me in awe, and I couldn't resist practicing every night in my room. That sense of immersion in something new remains vivid in my memory, and it fuels my desire to inspire the same level of curiosity and passion in my students. I create a non-judgmental space that encourages exploration and self-expression, where making mistakes is seen as an opportunity for growth. When students feel safe to take risks, they become more receptive to constructive criticism and open to the joy of learning.

Here's how a typical trombone or trumpet lesson would go:
- 10-15 minutes: fundamentals, including: long tones, lip slurs, mouthpiece buzzing, articulation studies, scale patterns, upper and lower range extension
-10-15 minutes: Student's personal goals, such as challenging band repertoire, jazz standards, etc.
Last 5 minutes: cool down.
Teaching philosophy:
I take pride in meeting each student where they are on their musical journey. I tailor my instruction to your unique needs, whether you're a beginner or an advanced musician. Together, we'll cultivate the skills necessary to play the music that fuels your passion.
Being a professional musician, composer, and arranger with a decade of experience, I have the ability to transcribe and arrange your favorite songs effortlessly. From popular hits by Bruno Mars and Stevie Wonder to iconic video game themes like Super Mario Brothers and Zelda, I've worked with a wide variety of music to inspire my students. Through my extensive knowledge of music theory and ear training, I'll not only help you learn the songs you love but also develop your own musical style.
In addition to my teaching expertise, I hold a BA in Psychology with a Music Minor from the Ohio State University and a MM with an emphasis in Jazz Studies from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. As an M1 certified instructor at Musicologie, I'm dedicated to unlocking your full potential.
I offer private lessons for trombone, euphonium, and trumpet, covering fundamental techniques, music theory, jazz theory, improvisation, composition, and music engraving and notation. To support your learning journey, all students enrolled in private lessons gain access to a Google Drive folder filled with educational resources for all instruments.

This guy makes the lessons super easy, but more important he is not the kind of person who makes you feel like you’re less because you don’t know anything, instead he motivates you to keep learning and to actually like the instrument that you’re playing
Very fun and a great teacher
My daughter plays trombone and learned a great deal from Ben. He has a great approach, setting a good level of expectations but approaching the student with a calm, gentle demeanor. My daughter's proficiency and confidence grew tremendously with Ben's instruction.
Ben is a really nice teacher! He is really good at quickly figuring out how to play the songs I wanted to learn. I always wished for a longer lesson because they went too quickly. He is really good at a lot of instruments. I loved listening to him play different instruments while I was in the waiting room waiting for my lesson. I definitely recommend Ben as a teacher!
Ben is an excellent teacher that I highly recommend. He did a great job teaching all necessary piano skills to my son while also making it fun! My son was always constantly in awe that class was already over and he looked forward to class with Ben every week. I am so grateful for all that Ben taught my son!
Ben is a great guitar instructor. Going into lessons, I had minimal guitar experience and also only a very basic understanding of music theory. I had the pleasure of taking lessons from Ben for eight months and in that time I surpassed my expectations of what I thought I could achieve. He is very patient and is great at explaining music in a language that is easy to understand. I highly recommend him as an instructor.
I was able to form a very nice connection with Mr Ben and he was an expert at figuring out the composition of songs I wanted to play while also being able to greatly increase my sight reading and guitar skills through the Mel Bay books
I started guitar lessons with Ben with a very limited knowledge of music. One of the first things he said to me was that anybody can learn to play an instrument.
Each lesson Ben taught me was accompanied with the mechanics and music theory behind it. Being more on the left-brained side, I appreciated learning that way. I improved quickly over a short period of time, and it was very encouraging.
Ben is patient, kind, and an incredibly talented musician. His musical intelligence is bar none. I would absolutely recommend him to everybody.Great trombone player!!!!! amazing tone and technique!!!!! had to move to Texas with my wife- hope my next teacher is half as good as Benjamin
Ben is such a great musician and person!!! He is very willing to help his students in any way they want to learn, and he's filled with so much knowledge that he's really excited to share with people. Very passionate and talented player, and great at explaining concepts to any age. It will be a treat to study music with him, especially if you're interested in the language of jazz!
Ben is a very patient teacher, fun to work with and amazing knowledge of music. I've learned so much doing guitar lessons for several months and would highly recommend
