About Alicia

Hi! My name is Alicia and I play the French horn. Ever since I was a kid listening to and watching the Star Wars and Harry Potter movies, I knew I wanted to play the horn. It's one of the coolest instruments out there! One of my goals with teaching is to get rid of the stigma that horn is "the hardest instrument." Sure, it has its difficult things to master, but if you can buzz your lips together, you have a great shot at becoming great at this instrument!
With the power of listening to pieces together, and at home, creating a good buzz, and singing with your heart through the horn, you'll be getting it in no time!

I also have a love for jazz! I grew up playing in my middle and high school jazz bands with my horn, transposing the trombone parts. After that, I joined the BU Big Band on trumpet. Picking up the trumpet after learning horn was super fun and allowed me to gain more perspective on myself as a musician. After all that jazz, I went back to my singing roots and joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Festival Chorus. I've been a Soprano 1 in the chorus for the past three years.

Below is a breakdown of my experience:

Boston University's School of Music (BM in Horn Performance).
Horn: 10 years; Jazz horn: 8 years; Trumpet: 2 years; Singing: 11 years

About the lesson

Listening is the key! Can't play the music if you don't listen to others and yourself. Recording yourself will answer a lot of questions about your playing!

Lesson plan includes: Fundamentals (including ear training exercises) , work on assigned solo/ensemble rep from previous lesson, listen to a piece or player for sound inspiration, work on NEW repertoire for the next lesson, (if jazz is our focus, end with some improv).

Who my lessons are for: Since I am able to tailor lessons to each student, and see what methods and routines work the best for them, all age ranges of student are welcome! I have worked primarily with middle and high schoolers before, and have worked with some undergraduate and elementary schoolers.

My diverse background of musical knowledge allows me to explain things in several different ways. This helps me communicate crucial ideas to students in ways that they can understand and internalize. If playing the line isn't working, then go ahead and try singing it to get it more expressive!
