About MaKayla

I am a reading interventionist in Arkansas, but recently moved from Colorado where I taught first and third grade at a pre-engineering school. I completed my student teaching at a place-based school where hands-on learning was the priority. Prior to having my own classroom, I was a substitute teacher in both Laramie and Casper, WY. I tutored for three years at the University of Wyoming Literacy Research Center and Clinic. I also have experience in student mentorship and after-school clubs and activities. I have my MA in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) and BA in Elementary Education with minors in Honors and Elementary Literacy, and concentrations in Early Childhood Education, Cultural Diversity, and Creative Arts. I have a passion for early literacy, but on my free time, I love to read, spend time outside, and play games.

About the lesson

I follow a structured-phonics model to follow a specific scope and sequence catering to your child’s gaps in reading. We will do activities like spelling words using letter boards (either magnetic or digital), spelling words on a white board, reading and writing connected sentences, and practicing irregular words necessary for reading fluency. I also practice knowledge-building through read aloud books, multi-text research, and whatever else might suit your child. I also love to incorporate movement or hands-on learning wherever possible. I look forward to getting to know each of my students so that I can meet their needs and motivations to increase their engagement and reading abilities.
