About Philip

Originally an electrical engineer, I switched to data analysis after completing an MMath and an MSc in Statistics. I am now semi-retired and am free to pursue my wish of teaching maths and statistics to upcoming generations. This has been a long held desire.

About the lesson

I first want to give the student a view of the landscape of a particular topic. For instance, I would not introduce algebra by drilling how to simplify quadratic fractions. Instead, I would spend some time demonstrating how algebra is used to solve real world problems. The analogy I sometimes use is that one doesn't introduce architecture to a student by delving into the details of how bricks are made. Once I have the student engaged, my focus is on ensuring they have a working understanding of principles and techniques. I then emphasise the importance of practice. Many students feel they need to memorise formulae and particular results; I discourage them from explicit memorisation and assure them that regular practice of methods and techniques will build a "muscle memory". The analogy I use for this is playing a musical instrument, I have other activities up my sleeve for the non-musical.
