About John

I have 25 years of experience teaching honors and AP chemistry at an independent school in NC, where my students have collectively excelled on the national exam, averaging over a 4/5 in my time there. My students also regularly won honors in the ACS Chemistry Olympiad competition. Previous to coming to Raleigh, I taught chemistry (and some physics) for 6 years at a boarding school in CT. I have tutored students in general chemistry courses at Duke and UNC as well as in organic chemistry. I have prided myself on helping my students lose their fear of a challenging subject and giving them a good reason to feel proud of their progress and accomplishments.

About the lesson

Since retiring from the classroom 2 years ago, I have been working remotely with students at all levels, using Zoom to both help new students understand general, honors, and AP chemistry as well as reconnect with some of my own former students as they navigate their university courses in both general chemistry and organic chemistry. I exercise patience in helping my students learn to be better, more strategic problem-solvers. I am able to fill in gaps that I might discover by providing pointers and background material to further understand current problem sets as well as handle related problems on their own in the future. I furnish notes taken during our online sessions via pdfs so that students always have them to refer to later. I am located in the Raleigh, NC area but can work with students anywhere online through Zoom.
