About Richard

Since 1976 I have taught over 1,000 hours of EFL to individuals and groups at different levels , including at York's "English Language Centre" and at "English in York". I have also taught French and German to individuals and to evening classes. I taught Phonetics, EFL and "Learning that LASTS" for the European Training Programme.

I have an enhanced DBS certificate which is automatically updated each year.

I trained for my degree at Huddersfield University, for my PGCE at the University of York and for my CELTA at the English Language Centre, York.

At "English in York" I have been teaching two Saudi adults and a Colombian adult - all at elementary level. I am also tutoring a Swiss-French lady working towards her Cambridge Advanced exam. In addition, I am teaching a lady from Kazakhstan and a lady and gent from Cuba - all at intermediate level.

About the lesson

Want to brush up your skills or start from scratch? Whatever level or duration, I am the tutor for you! My aim is to help you to help yourself - with lots of enthusiasm, encouragement, fun & laughter.

I teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Apart from "O" and "A" levels, I have an upper second class honours degree in French and German, a PGCE, a TESOL qualification from Bradford College and a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) in 2011, an RSA qualification in Literacy and Numeracy tuition and certificates in linguistics. I also have DBS Enhanced Disclosure certificate which is auto- updated.

I HAVE REDUCED MY HOURLY RATE TO £20 for a limited period, and if you have some friends who want to come along, just add them at only £5 extra per person (maximum charge: £50 per hour). Also, if you book and pay for the first four hours in advance, you will receive a 10% reduction!

I teach in Acomb and in York for the basic fee, but I am willing to travel to other areas of York and the surrounding area. If I come to you, I will need to charge extra for petrol and time, but this is negotiable.

At the moment I am available weekdays any time. I am also available some evenings by negotiation. I teach any age and I can prepare students for the FCE, CAE, IELTS and BULATS exams.

Regarding online tutoring, I have Skype, WeChat and Zoom accounts, and have experience tutoring German and Chinese students online. I charge the same price for this.

And finally ... a personal message to you: don't be afraid to make mistakes - remember the saying "Those who never made a mistake never made anything!" Persevere, don't take yourself too seriously, and enjoy the language-learning process.
