About Jo
I am a working Director and Writer currently active at the highest level of the industry. My career has been defined by directing large-scale, productions for the UK's most prestigious stages—from the RSC and National Theatre to the Royal Exchange Manchester and the Barbican.
Alongside my professional directing, I have always maintained a deep commitment to training the next generation of actors. I regularly direct final-year productions and teach specialist workshops at institutions like the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Central School of Speech and Drama, and the Royal Northern College of Music.
Why work with me?
Because I know exactly what the industry (and the drama school panels) are looking for right now. I don’t just teach you how to "act" a scene; I teach you how to be directable. As a Director who sits behind the casting table for major productions, I can tell you exactly what makes us lean in and what makes us tune out. I bridge the gap between "student" and "working professional," helping you develop the resilience, technique, and strategic thinking needed for a long-term career.

Who are my students?
Drama School Applicants: I have extensive experience with the audition processes for RAM, RCM, Central School of Speech and Drama, Welsh College, Guildhall, and LAMDA. I help students select material that highlights their unique voice, not just what they think the panel wants to see.
Professional Actors: I mentor working actors who want to refine their process, prepare for major role auditions, or transition into new areas of work (e.g., Musical Theatre to Plays, or vice versa).
Opera Singers: as someone with musical and dramatic training I train classical singers in acting.
Creatives: I offer mentorship on "The Business" of theatre—pitching projects, developing new writing, and creative leadership.
What I Offer
I create a safe, rigorous, and inspiring "creative playground" where you can take risks and find your authentic voice. My sessions are tailored entirely to your needs, but often cover:
• Audition Technique: How to walk into the room, own the space, and deliver a performance that feels fresh, authentic and spontaneous every time.
• Musical Theatre acting: Treating the song as dialogue. I help you find the narrative engine of a piece so you aren't just "singing," but storytelling.
• Script Analysis: Breaking down a text with a Director’s eye. We look at structure, beats, and character objectives to give your performance a solid architectural foundation.
• Developing New Work: With the industry moving towards new writing, I teach actors how to create a character from scratch—building a role that hasn't been "solved" by a previous cast and how to develop their own new work.
• Career Strategy: Practical, honest advice on navigating the industry, handling rejection, and building a sustainable body of work.
I work largely online via Zoom, allowing me to mentor artists globally while I continue my directing work.

I don't think I would be on stage if it wasn't for Jo , she joyfully got me to feel confident in Shakespeare , musicals and dramas. Working with Jo means you get to benefit from her years of experience and passion about acting and story telling .
I was fortunate enough to have Jo teach me acting and musical theatre at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Her classes were a total highlight of my time there. I was completely inspired by her creativity and passion and I have carried so much of what she taught me into my career. Jo showed me how to collaborate with directors, company members and my fellow actors as well as what a safe, exciting and creative room should feel like. So much of what I’ve learned from Jo has made me the actor I am and my time as her student was one of the most joyous and fulfilling times of my education.
I am a musical director and have worked with Jo in both educational establishments and top opera houses, as well as in the West End. She is the most brilliant acting coach and director I know - the way she works with students and professionals alike is inspiring and detailed, always getting the best from everyone and really allowing them to shine.
Her knowledge and experience is hugely varied and her approach personal and extremely encouraging, whilst coaxing people to their absolute best.
To be able to work with Jo is like gold dust...View more recommendations
