About Ruben
I’m Ruben Kingman, a guitarist, composer, and producer with a First Class Honours degree in Performance & Recording from the University of West London. My musical world blends Folk-Blues, Jazz-Fusion, Latin-Americana, and experimental sounds, shaping a style that’s expressive, eclectic, and driven by creativity. I currently perform with psychedelic soul outfit Nookee and co-lead the improvisation-focused Kingman Project. Before that, I cut my teeth playing with BlackElvis, developing a strong foundation in blues-driven rock and live performance. These experiences have allowed me to grow as both a player and collaborator, working across a wide range of genres and musical settings. Beyond performing, I’m passionate about teaching and helping others discover their own musical identity. Whether I’m on stage, in the studio, or guiding a student, my approach is rooted in curiosity, expression, and a love for the unexpected.

My Approach to Tutoring: My teaching style is centred on musicality, creativity, and helping each student develop their own voice on the instrument. I combine technical development with practical, musical application - focusing on rhythm, tone, improvisation, and expressive playing. Lessons often include a mix of technique work, ear training, repertoire, and creative exercises tailored to the student’s goals. Techniques & Methodology: I use a personalised, student-led approach, adapting methods from contemporary, classical, and improvisational traditions. Rather than relying on one fixed syllabus, I design a structured but flexible path that builds confidence, encourages curiosity, and keeps learning engaging. For students interested in songwriting or performance, I can also integrate composition, arrangement, and recording techniques. Lesson Length: A typical lesson is 60 minutes, though 30-minute and 90-minute sessions are available depending on age, attention span, or depth of study. Qualifications & Experience: I hold a First Class Honours degree in Performance & Recording from the University of West London and have extensive experience performing and recording professionally. I play with Nookee, The Kingman Project, and previously BlackElvis, bringing real-world musicianship and versatility into my teaching. I’ve taught students across a wide range of genres and skill levels, both in-person and online. Who the Lessons Are For: Lessons are open to all ages and levels - from complete beginners picking up a guitar for the first time to intermediate and advanced players looking to refine technique, explore new genres, or develop their creative style. My goal is to create a supportive, inspiring environment where every student can grow at their own pace and enjoy the process of making music.
