About Jamie
I am an academic law tutor offering support across a broad range of legal subjects, with particular expertise in legal reasoning, legal writing, examination technique, and critical analysis. I specialise in ongoing tutoring and skills development. I do not generally provide one-off "answer sessions" for individual legal problems. While my academic background includes Scots law, English law, EU law, and international law, my teaching focuses on the skills that underpin legal study regardless of jurisdiction or area of law. These include analysing legal problems, applying legal authority, constructing persuasive arguments, engaging critically with academic sources, and communicating ideas clearly and effectively. Although my academic background is rooted in common law systems, I regularly work with students studying civil law, mixed legal systems, EU law, and international law. Because my approach focuses on legal method and analytical skills, I am able to support students from a wide range of legal and educational backgrounds. I have worked with students on a variety of academic and professional objectives, including undergraduate and postgraduate law modules, public administration courses, dissertation projects, interview preparation, and comparative legal studies. I have also supported non-native English speakers seeking to discuss complex legal issues confidently in English, including students comparing different legal systems and legal institutions across jurisdictions. Whether you need support with understanding course materials, essay writing, problem questions, coursework, dissertations, or exam preparation, I aim to help you develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed independently. To best provide you with support, we would begin with a 25-minute trial lesson to discuss your academic goals, identify any challenges you are facing, and determine whether my approach is the right fit for your needs. This initial session also allows me to prepare targeted support based on your individual requirements. Thereafter, lessons can be tailored to your objectives. Depending on your needs, we may focus on substantive legal concepts, legal reasoning, essay structure, problem-solving techniques, examination strategy, or detailed feedback on written work. Where appropriate, I can review assignments in advance and provide both written and verbal feedback during our sessions. If you require a lesson at short notice, send me a message and I may be able to open additional availability. My doctoral research combines doctrinal and socio-legal analysis to examine how legal systems function in practice and has required extensive engagement with legal theory, legal methodology, and complex legal argumentation. This experience enables me to help students move beyond surface-level understanding and develop clear, structured, and persuasive legal arguments. I support students in developing the skills that law schools and examiners value most: applying case law effectively, constructing coherent arguments, analysing competing interpretations, engaging critically with academic literature, and writing with clarity and precision. I also work with non-native English speakers to strengthen academic writing, improve grammar and style, and communicate complex legal ideas confidently in English. My teaching is rigorous, methodical, and adapted to each student's level, course requirements, and academic goals. I specialise in ongoing tutoring and skills development. I do not generally provide one-off "answer sessions" for individual legal problems. I specialise in ongoing tutoring and skills development. I do not generally provide one-off "answer sessions" for individual legal problems. My approach focuses on helping students understand legal principles, develop analytical skills, and improve their academic performance over time. As many legal issues require careful consideration, reflection, and follow-up, a single lesson is not always sufficient to provide meaningful support. For this reason, I prefer to work with students over a series of lessons, allowing us to explore issues in appropriate depth and develop a structured plan for improvement. I believe it is important to be transparent about this from the outset, as I would rather set realistic expectations than risk disappointing a student who may be hoping that a single lesson will fully resolve a complex legal issue.

I have taught law at a Scottish university, where I delivered undergraduate teaching in Criminal Law, Delict, Legal Systems and Methods, and Succession. I have also tutored students across a range of subjects and jurisdictions, including the Law of Evidence, International and European Tax Law, Australian law, EU law, public international law, and legal methodology. In addition to legal education, I have extensive experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), including academic writing, legal English, and advanced communication skills. This enables me to support both native and non-native English speakers in developing clear, precise, and persuasive legal writing. Whether you need support with understanding course materials, essay writing, problem questions, coursework, dissertations, exam preparation, interview preparation, or academic communication skills, I aim to help you develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed independently.
