About James
Certified Expertise Meets Real-World Application
Hello! I’m James, a certified high school mathematics educator (OCT) and a dedicated specialist in helping students navigate the complexities of senior-level math.
With a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Pure Mathematics and my current pursuit of a Master of Data Science, my background isn't just in "knowing" math—it's in the art of teaching it. I have spent years in the classroom and in one-on-one settings, helping students master Grade 11 & 12 Functions, Calculus, and IB Mathematics.
Why Work With Me?
Choosing the right tutor is about finding a balance between academic rigor and a supportive environment. Students and parents choose to work with me because:
Professional Credentials: As a member of the Ontario College of Teachers, I have a deep understanding of the curriculum standards and exactly what examiners are looking for in top-tier assessments.
A Modern Perspective: My transition into Data Science allows me to show students how classroom theory evolves into the high-demand tech skills of tomorrow. I make math relevant, not just a requirement.
Tailored Logic: I don’t believe in "one size fits all." I specialize in identifying a student’s unique learning style and breaking down intimidating topics into logical, manageable steps.
Building Success Together
Mathematics can be a daunting subject, but it is also a powerful tool for your future. Whether you are aiming for a top-percentile grade in Advanced Functions, preparing for university-level Statistics, or looking to build a stronger foundation in Calculus, I am here to provide the structure, clarity, and encouragement you need to succeed.
I look forward to helping you reach—and exceed—your academic goals!

Teaching Philosophy: The "Logic-First" Framework
I move away from rote memorization and toward conceptual fluency. Using the "Gradual Release of Responsibility" model (I Do, We Do, You Do), I ensure students don't just watch me solve problems but actively build the neural pathways to solve them independently. My methodology integrates:
Scaffolded Learning: Breaking down complex Calculus or Functions problems into manageable logic steps.
Visual Integration: Using dynamic graphing tools (like Desmos or digital whiteboards) to turn abstract equations into visual data.
Metacognition: I teach students how to think about math, helping them identify their own patterns of error to improve self-correction during exams.
A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)
The Retrieval Warm-up (5-10 mins): A quick "check for understanding" on the previous session’s concepts to ensure long-term retention.
Guided Inquiry (15-20 mins): Introducing the new concept through a real-world lens—often using Data Science examples to show the "why" behind the math.
Collaborative Problem Solving (20 mins): Working through curriculum-specific problems (Ontario, IB, etc.) using shared digital tools.
The "Flight Check" (10 mins): An independent problem where the student demonstrates mastery, followed by a preview of upcoming school lessons.
What Sets Me Apart
I offer a rare trifecta of qualifications that bridges the gap between high school and career success:
Certified Professionalism: As an OCT-certified educator, I have formal training in how students actually learn and retain information, unlike many peer tutors.
Subject Mastery: My Pure Math degree means I understand the "deep logic" of mathematics, not just the shortcuts.
Future-Ready Perspective: Currently pursuing a Master of Data Science, I can guide students on how their math curriculum connects to high-demand careers in tech, AI, and analytics.
Who the Lessons Are For
I provide specialized support for students who are serious about their academic trajectory:
High School: Grade 11 & 12 (Functions, Advanced Functions, Calculus & Vectors).
Curriculum Specialization: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics.
University Prep: Students transitioning into STEM, Finance, or Data Science programs who need to strengthen their foundational Calculus or Statistics.
Adult Learners: Individuals looking to pivot into Data Science or Tech who require a refresher in linear algebra or statistical reasoning.
