About Louise
After a degree in Sociology and English Lit, I started tutoring in 1991 at a sixth form college in Oxford. Many of the students had challenging learning behaviours and emotional issues. I am passionate about my subject and that really comes across in my teaching. I love seeing students grow and mature in the subject and when they get that 'ping' moment of understanding - there's nothing like it!

I start off with a good grounding in the general theories for every topic area. This is more than half the battle! I look at specific definitions of key terminology and ensure students fully understand these. I then look at specific key empirical studies and relate these to an area of debate in the topic area, with an eye on the methods used and the ideological frameworks in which the studies were placed, in order to allow students to develop a critical thinking way of understanding the strengths and weaknesses of approaches. I set work from past papers regularly to ensure students gain familiarity with the type of questions asked and develop their exam answer technique. I also couch sociology in its general philosophical and socio-cultural/historical context, which deepens students critical thinking and cultural awareness of both society and sociology as an academic discipline. For revision, we will cover the syllabus areas one at a time, using materials from past papers as a guideline. I will provide really useful revision notes and mind maps for each part of each topic.
