About Gareth
I am originally from England and have taught English as a Foreign Language in three different countries prior to moving to Texas. I am a fully certified EC–6 educator with additional certifications in History and ESL (English as a Second Language).
I have eight years of experience teaching in elementary school, where I have taught Reading Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science across 3rd, 4th, and 6th grades. Throughout this time, I have supported student growth and achievement, particularly in preparing students for the Reading STAAR assessment. Additionally, I have one year of experience teaching Texas History at the middle school level.
I am also a father to a 5th grader and a 7th grader, one of whom I have had the unique experience of teaching twice. Being a parent allows me to build meaningful connections with my students and better understand their academic and social needs.

Lessons begin with an engaging hook designed to activate or build background knowledge, preparing students to enter the Gradual Release of Responsibility model (“I do, We do, You do”).
I Do (Direct Instruction/Modeling):
I explicitly model new skills using think-aloud strategies to make my cognitive processes visible. This stage establishes the purpose for learning and provides clear, concrete examples of the target skill.
We Do (Guided Practice/Collaboration):
Students and I work together to apply the new skill through guided practice. During this phase, I scaffold learning by prompting, questioning, and providing immediate feedback, while continuously checking for understanding. This collaborative approach supports active engagement and social learning.
You Do (Independent Application):
Students independently apply the skill to demonstrate mastery and transfer their learning. I monitor progress, assess understanding, provide targeted feedback, and address any remaining gaps.
By structuring lessons in this way, I effectively scaffold learning, build student confidence, and promote increasing independence.
