About Shona

My name is Shona and I am an undergraduate at UCD. I loved Maths from a young age and would be thrilled to inspire a similar joy in other students. Maths doesn't have to be miserable!

I qualified for the European Maths Olympiad based on my Junior Cert Maths and Science results, indicating an exam result that scored in the top 0.4% of students across the country.
During school, I took part in the European Youth Parliament and qualified for the National Session. I competed on the committee for Economic & Monetary Affairs which gave me a much deeper understanding of Economics and helped my study of the subject at LC level and now at third level, too.

I sat my Leaving Cert in 2021 and chose to sit my exams in lieu of predicted grades.

I was selected by the Irish Independent to be that year's Leaving Cert 'diarist', meaning I was asked to write an article about my experience to be published each day of the exams. I learned so much about writing and would be glad to teach English grinds to other students and show how I got there.

In my exams, I ended up getting top marks, with 8 H1s altogether (I had taken Applied Maths as an extra subject). This secured me a place on the prestigious Economics & Finance course in UCD, one of the only courses in Ireland to require 625 points for entry.

Nowadays, I am enjoying college life and currently undertaking a corporate internship in the world of finance. Times are financially tough for us all, and I certainly feel this as a student living away from home. I would love to be able to support myself throughout the rest of my college journey, and to do so by doing something that I love... Maths!

About the lesson

A firm believer in practice makes perfect! The best way to improve your maths skills is to try, try, try. My teaching focus is on getting students to attempt questions of all levels, which will help improve their critical thinking and comprehension skills. Each lesson will last approximately 40 minutes to one hour and can be carried out in-person or online, whatever suits the student the best! I can provide lessons all the way up to Leaving Cert Higher Level in each subject. I am also more than willing to work around a student's needs in terms of number/length of lessons and lesson content.
