About Patricia

Hi guys, I want you to be able to feel comfortable with me and confide in me about your difficulties in math so that I can help you overcome them effectively. I won't ever "judge" for mistakes, and believe they are tools that we can use to detect where there is room for a new ability to form. I am quite young, but for many of you, this could mean you are less intimidated and don't need to be formal with me at all. Just think of me as your study buddy (like a classmate - but one that has all the answers you are looking for). My recent graduation also allows me to have a better memory and insight on middle and high school material covered, meaning that I would be able to alter lessons on short notice to fit your needs the best with such a versatile and fit memory. After over 5 years of tutoring, I have had experience with many different types of students and have learned that there isn't a single approach to teaching that ticks all the boxes. That is why, I believe it is most important to really hone in on skills you are good at and use them to improve those that need that little helping hand. It is not a matter of whether can you do it but how we can get you to the point where you confidently solve that type of problem. If you are looking for someone close to your age, with experience in tutoring, who you can communicate with and grow towards achieving your goals, I am perfect for you.

My lessons are very open to flexibility and change depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the student. If someone gets better by solving many problems, I will provide a lot of homework and concentrate on going through the answers in class. Slides will be prepared to better explain an unclear topic if they prefer strengthening theory and skills through lecture-style interactive sessions. Anything in between depending on what the student needs the most can be agreed upon. It is important to listen to what and how the student can benefit most and what they like and dislike about their current study methods so that I may optimize their experience. I teach from middle school up to grade 12, especially focusing on International Baccalaureate-style questions but am open to any high school course. After a first session, a lesson can look like 10 minutes going over homework, 5 of chatting about what was hard and what was easy, moving into either: a conceptual re-introduction of the class covering a new topic OR guided time to work on challenging questions prepared by me beforehand, for 30 minutes, ending with the distribution of new homework. The child may naturally bring coursework that they find confusing or challenging to discuss as well, and can integrate their school studies as much or little as necessary. Overall, the lessons I provide are meant to help the child, and we all study at different paces with different techniques. Practice and theory are the two main necessary components and both need to be addressed the degree to which they are included in classes can fluctuate depending on the student's disposition to the specific topic and their already developed methodologies.
