About Pandit Chandra Nath
Sri Chandra Nath Shastri, was born in 1948 in Kolkata, India. Born into a Brahmin family steeped in music, his artistic journey began even before his first breath. His grandmother, Smt. Indira Devi, was a niece of the legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore, and his father, Dr. Mouli Nath Shastri, was a physician who also harbored a deep passion for music. A vocalist trained under Tagore himself and a Tabla player, Dr. Shastri became Chandra Nath's first guru, along with his elder brother. The young Chandra Nath blossomed under their tutelage, his talent for the Tabla evident from a young age. The family's subsequent move to Varanasi, the heart of the Banaras Gharana style, further shaped Shastri's musical journey. At age 5 Shastri began learning from his guruji, Pandit Anokhelal Mishra of Banaras, and later from his son, Pandit Ramji Mishra. His exceptional talent was evident early on, culminating in a victory at a national All India Radio competition at the young age of 23. This prestigious win not only established his prowess but also earned him the title of "Pandit." Shastri's career flourished as a sought-after staff artist for All India Radio. He also performed several times on Doordarshan as well, captivating audiences with his mesmerizing Tabla performances on both radio and television. Beyond broadcast, he enthralled live audiences in solo concerts, percussion ensembles, and collaborations with legendary musicians like Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Ramesh Mishra, Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra, Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan, and many more. Shastri's dedication extends beyond performance. He is a respected Tabla guru, imparting his knowledge and preserving the purity of the Banaras Gharana for future generations. His experience as a teacher ensures the continued legacy of this esteemed style within the ever-evolving realm of Indian classical music. Pandit Chandra Nath Shastri remains a towering figure in the world of Tabla. His life exemplifies the power of artistic lineage, unwavering dedication, and the responsibility of transmitting a rich musical tradition to future generations.
