About Derek
With a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance and over seven years of teaching experience, I am deeply passionate about guiding students in their musical journey. My background in both classical and modern music equips me with a diverse skill set, allowing me to offer a rich and varied approach to violin and viola instruction. My experience performing and teaching has honed my ability to connect with students of all levels, from beginners to advanced players preparing for conservatory exams.
I believe that effective teaching goes beyond just technical instruction; it involves fostering a genuine love for music and creating an engaging learning environment. My lessons are designed to be both educational and enjoyable, incorporating a range of musical styles and genres to keep students motivated. Whether focusing on classical repertoire or exploring contemporary pieces, I tailor my approach to meet each student’s individual interests and goals.
My teaching philosophy emphasizes flexibility and personalization. I adapt my methods to suit each student’s unique needs, ensuring that they receive instruction that is both relevant and effective. I strive to create a supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable taking risks, experimenting with their playing, and expressing their musicality. This approach helps students build confidence and develop a deeper connection to their instruments.
Outside of teaching, I am committed to continuing my own musical development and staying current with new teaching methods and trends. I regularly participate in workshops and professional development opportunities to enhance my skills and bring fresh perspectives to my lessons. My ultimate goal is to inspire and empower my students, helping them achieve their musical aspirations and enjoy a lifelong appreciation for the violin and viola.

In my violin and viola lessons, I focus on blending classical technique with modern musical exploration to provide a well-rounded educational experience. Each session begins with a tailored warm-up routine that addresses the specific needs of the student, whether they are a beginner or an advanced player. This routine is designed to enhance technical skills, improve tone quality, and develop proper playing habits, setting a solid foundation for the rest of the lesson.
For students preparing for conservatory exams, I offer structured lessons that cover all necessary technical and musical requirements. We work on a range of exercises, scales, and repertoire that align with the exam criteria, ensuring students are well-prepared and confident. I also provide guidance on performance skills, including stage presence and interpretation, to help students excel in their exams and auditions.
I strive to make each lesson engaging and enjoyable by incorporating a variety of musical styles and genres. While we focus on building technical proficiency, I also encourage students to explore different musical expressions and styles. This approach keeps the lessons dynamic and helps students develop a versatile playing ability. Whether it’s classical pieces, modern compositions, or popular tunes, I tailor the repertoire to match each student’s interests and goals.
Flexibility is a key aspect of my teaching methodology. I adapt my approach based on the student’s progress, interests, and specific needs. My aim is to create a supportive and motivating environment where students feel inspired to practice and improve. By combining structured learning with a flexible and enjoyable approach, I help students build their skills and achieve their musical aspirations while fostering a lifelong love for the violin and viola.
