About Paul

I am a mature, but very fit and physically active male. I have a tourism business in Tasmania, but also spend time in Melbourne.
I am widely travelled and spent time in China. My own road to learning Mandarin has been and still is long and hard but the enjoyment of learning is addictive. I have learnt more about my native English through learning Chinese, which has been a journey in its self. I understand the difficulties that English students face learning this language and how bad translation can lead to difficulties that can affect everything from ones personal relationships to working life. Teaching a language is a journey together- both the student and teacher gain immensely from the experience.
Trust and feeling at ease with your tutor is a very important aspect of learning and it is suggested that the first meeting should be more about getting to know each other, in a neutral and safe environment.

About the lesson

Learning from life - prefer getting out and about in the real world, classroom teaching has its place, but cannot replace - "Lessons from Living"
I subscribe to active learning - going for a walk, going shopping, playing a sport, my classroom is going to a shop, cooking a meal.
Often the most productive learning happens over a cup of coffee.

My experience comes from teaching my own Chinese wife and my own journey learning mandarin, although I have had some formal TEFL training.

I prefer to to work with Secondary students to adult. As I understand and can speak some mandarin it is more productive to teach Chinese speakers who desire to improve or learn English from scratch.
