About Holly
I'm a working musician myself, still gigging most weekends locally while building teaching alongside it, and honestly the two feed each other more than I expected when I first started out. Four years into teaching now, I've worked with about sixty students, mostly teenagers and young adults who want something a bit more real and current than formal lessons often feel like. I didn't go to music school, I learned mostly by doing, plenty of mistakes made in public rehearsal spaces and small gigs along the way, and I bring that same scrappy energy into teaching. I connect particularly well with students who feel intimidated by more traditional, formal teachers, since I'm genuinely still figuring plenty out myself and I think that honesty puts people at ease quickly. My teaching style is relaxed, current, and a bit unpolished compared to more established studios, but it's built on real, ongoing performing experience rather than theory alone. I care a lot about students actually playing music with other people eventually, rather than just improving quietly and privately forever without ever sharing it. Watching a student work up the nerve to play somewhere for the first time is honestly one of my favorite parts of this whole gig. I'm not the finished article myself, and that's exactly why this works.

"I'm still actively building my own playing career, gigging locally most weekends, so lessons with me come from someone genuinely living the same climb a lot of my students are aiming for themselves. We start with chords and simple songs, honestly nothing fancy or theoretical at first, because I believe playable fundamentals matter more than polish when you're just starting out. I teach a lot of what I've picked up actually performing, things like playing confidently even when nervous, recovering smoothly from a wrong note, and just pushing through an imperfect moment live. Repertoire is student-led almost entirely, whatever song someone's genuinely excited about learning, because forced repertoire kills motivation faster than anything else I've personally seen. I record lessons on my phone sometimes so students can hear themselves honestly, the same way I make myself listen back to my own rough gig recordings, cringing included occasionally. I'm upfront when something's outside my own direct experience, and I'd rather admit that clearly than pretend otherwise to sound more impressive. Feedback stays direct but genuinely encouraging, since I remember exactly how discouraging it felt being harshly critiqued as a beginner myself. We talk openly about real goals, whether that's simple personal enjoyment or eventually playing somewhere properly. This isn't polished textbook teaching, and I think that honesty genuinely helps students relax.
