Decoding over guessing: I teach systematic synthetic phonics. This means we don't guess words based on pictures, we look at the letters, identify the sounds and blend them together. While there are only 26 letters, there are roughly 44 distinct sounds (phonemes) in English. We map these out so nothing is a surprise
