About Jonathan
I have worked in Education for over twenty years in both elementary school, middle school, high school, and college between California and Oregon. I worked at Bakersfield College and CSU, Bakersfield, and am now currently part of the Community Teaching Fellows Foundation in Fresno, CA. Finally, I am looking to teach English at the community college in Clovis and Fresno State.
One expectation I have for my clients is that they commit prior to our engagement with a block of time where they write creatively and about a topic they wish to know outside of school. This helps me understand the background of my clients and see their interests while assessing their level of writing. And I can help with writing about what my clients wish to express in more depth by research, summary, and thesis statements.

My main focus is to bring attention to the parts of an essay. I first address the most important part, the thesis statement, and if it answers the prompt. I do this because there is a hierarchy of priorities. Without a relevant thesis, the rest of the paper can move off topic easily. Next, I would look at the topic sentences, and I see if they unpack the thesis statement. With the thesis developed with topic sentences, the essay has a basic outline. In the end, the thesis statement is the goal for all essays because it suggests an order for the paper, argues or explains a point to be supported, and has its main claim backed by evidence explicitly or implicitly for the rest of the paper.
Some students prefer starting with an outline, an effective tool to keep structured and on-topic. Because essays often focus on new information students have yet to explore, it is easy to lose focus because from all the information. If this is a serious issue, then reading more information, summarizing its points, and bringing this information back to the thesis is necessary, especially when students inform themselves adequately with the required knowledge needed to answer the prompt thoroughly for the first time.
Many times, answering a question based on brand-new information is still difficult, and this is where brainstorming or invention comes into play. Really, the starting point depends on the student's knowledge of a topic. A helpful place for most students is the invention stage of writing where the reading and research is satisfactory, and we begin adding with brainstorming with different tools like an idea web or a t-graph. Different tools are for different areas of development in the essay depending on the basic understanding of the topic. Assessing the student knowledge of topics takes practice, for the student must also be honest with what they actually know, and what they think they know.
I offer one-on-one tutoring that will not only help students improve their grades, but also improve their understanding of the dynamics of writing well. I do this by defining the parts of the essay with the student until we have a consensus that matches their level with class requirements. I find that the style of learning gives depth to defining each piece of the essay because when beginning with a thesis or at least, culminating to the thesis, each student comes to own their perspective that is ordered by their grasp of language.
