About Steve
I am Steve, a 20 year professional having been the former head of department at one of the best comprehensive schools in the UK - Alexandra Park School, where I was head of department for circa 10 years. I once managed to get a cohort of 70 students a grade above their targets when they were predicted in the upper quartile in the country. If you do what I ask, you win.
I have dealt with a wide range of qualifications from 5000 word dissertations in the Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ) all the way down to the quick-fire questions of the AQA GCSE.
I was taught and mentored by the best, having been mentored by Simon Quy and Steve Connolly (former Chair of the Media Education Association) during my PGCE in Media Studies and English in 2007.
I have written published articles for Media Magazine on the pleasures of video games and the role of the gothic in heavy metal music.
I have wide ranging practical skills in film-making, digital software and AI use and can also teach practical photography skills alongside low-budget film-making using the latest technology. This allows me to assist with coursework but also give deeper insight on how texts are created.
I love the subject as it's an extension of my own interests and hobbies, I have a deep interest in heavy metal music, film-making, science-fiction and anthropology. It all turns up in Media and Film Studies!

I make Media + Film Studies accessible - using a set of written tools and the 'key concepts' to help you unpack any topic or text you are asked about at GCSE, BTEC or A-Level on whichever exam board required WJEC/Eduqas, OCR, Pearson, AQA and the i-GCSE.
I teach 14-19's. Lesson's are 1 hour.
My Methodology:
Media and Film Students tend to be very visual, so:
- I use a unique key concept/context mindmapping technique that allows you to understand how the text is functioning as a whole
- I use colour coded sentence starters to help you piece your writing together
- I give you a clear written tone and terminology to use, allowing you to say a lot on the page in as few words as possible.
- I use a clear marking style - using annotations to allow you to see where marks are awarded
- My near two decades of experience will allow me to diagnose your strengths, weaknesses and the limiting factors in your written technique so you can make the best progress - with proven results.
