About Avery

Avery was voted “Renaissance Man” in 5th grade, but for them, the title was not inclusive enough. Avery tutored over 80 hours of K-8 Math in a Grammar school before graduating high school, and started tutoring AP Physics the following year. They skipped 2 grades at Xavier, a top NY Prep school, completing AP Calculus as a junior and graduating with the annual award for highest achievement in Advanced Mathematics. Avery went on to spend time in fields including Math (Columbia), Mechanical Engineering (Marquette), Music & the Arts (CCNY), Neuroscience, and Psychology, finally acquiring a Bachelors of Science in the latter at Brooklyn College. Avery draws from a wide breadth of knowledge that can only be acquired from developing both as an artist and a scientist, learning from real teachers in every industry who use the skills they teach every day at work. Avery’s approach to material stresses the importance of lateral thinking and constructing a narrative to each lesson that leaves no stone unturned and teaches the student to think critically and independently. Along with tutoring, Avery has experience in the classroom teaching middle and upper school concurrently in the NY Prep scene. Most recently Avery participated in the 2022-2023 NYSAIS Beginning Teacher’s Institute, exchanging notes and strategies with independent school education specialists in the Greater NY City area.

About the lesson

Together we use smart tools to generate progressively more challenging problems that specifically address key points of misunderstanding and turn them into strong points. Instead of just talking about Math and Science, we do Math and Science. When tutoring or providing extra help for students outside of class, I provide remedial instruction that builds underlying foundation and empowers the student to learn current materials independently and unencumbered by previous discontinuities in knowledge or skill.
I am an interdisciplinary thinker and I run an inquiry based classroom where students apply engineering problem solving to problems of the world and nature in order to form their own solutions to problems. Through nurturing the students’ autonomy and encouraging critical thinking at length about complex problems, I teach my students to tolerate ambiguity and thrive in a problem solving environment. Due to the many learning styles I encounter while teaching math, I apply differentiated instruction by using visual explanations and immersing the students in the concepts with word problems to contextualize the classroom content.
