About Barbara

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil) and had the incredible opportunity to study at the University of Wisconsin for a year and a half on a fully paid scholarship. With over 6 years of professional experience, I’ve worked across a variety of languages and projects, and currently, I’m focused on Ruby on Rails in my role at Shopify.

I’ve had the chance to grow not just as a developer but as someone who deeply understands the challenges of learning to code. My journey has been full of lessons, and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with others who are looking to build their programming skills

About the lesson

Hi there! My name is Barbara. I've been programming since I was 17 years old—now I’m 30, and let me tell you, it wasn’t always easy! I struggled a lot in the beginning, often feeling like I’d never fully “get it.” But after pushing through those challenges, I’ve become not only a successful software developer but also someone who loves every aspect of coding.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with multiple programming languages, including C++, C, Python, and most recently, Ruby on Rails, which I use daily in my role as a software developer at Shopify. One thing I’ve learned along the way is that the hardest part is not the syntax or the language itself—it’s learning to think like a programmer. Once you understand the underlying logic, switching between languages becomes easy!

That’s why I’m here to help you. Whether you’re just starting or struggling to make sense of the “programmer mindset,” I’ll guide you through that journey. With over 10 years of experience and volunteer work teaching teenage girls how to code, I know how to break down complex concepts into easy-to-understand lessons that will help you level up your skills.
