When hiking, it's useful to have a guide, but everyone hike's up their own mountain. I try to provide scaffolding, e.g. an extra clue when a student is stuck or a reminder of what the bigger picture is. I try to listen to students are understand how they are understanding (or creatively misunderstanding) things. With a bit of patience, it's remarkable how much one can come to understand.
