About Katherine
My name is Katherine Dickens. I'm a Certified Dyslexia Interventionist and I get results! If you are tired of the frustration of trying to help your child read, you've come to the right place. With over 20 years of working with children, I'm able to use empathy, energy, and efficiency to help alleviate the pain of the reading challenges.
My passion as an academic therapist came from feeling frustrated with not being able to fully engage those students whose reading challenges were beyond my scope of work. In order to find a remedy, I went above and beyond line of duty as a classroom teacher to pursue powerful and effective strategies to be able to help those struggling readers as well as those struggling in math. Because I am an avid reader and ardent student, I learned how to effectively teach elementary math and reading using the same tried and true Orton Gillingham methodology.
I hold a Master's degree in Education. I am a certified elementary teacher in two states. I am also a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist. My two year training for Academic Language therapy was done at the Atlantic Seaboard Dyslexia Education Center located in Rockville, Maryland.

New clients are interviewed, assessed and then a prescription for therapy is made. Most families with dyslexic students prefer full Academic Language Therapy which includes intervention with reading, spelling, composition and writing (penmanship).
Most of my students are dyslexic, as regular tutoring normally does not work for this population.
If you are looking for a regular tutor--keep scrolling. If your student has been diagnosed with Dyslexia or if you are looking for intense, prescriptive and diagnostic academic therapy that will help your student in reading, spelling and writing then you've come to the right place.
My clients often send me pictures of them enjoying major milestones in their lives. While I was sick, one of my families sent me an awesome picture of my student to lift my spirits. I saw the picture as a representation of the boost in her confidence as a result of her overall significant progress in her academia. I get pictures of students who are reading books, when before our sessions, they would not pick up a single book!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do you work with students who have Dyslexia?
How long will it be before I see a difference in my reading?
What can I expect in a lesson?
How long is each session?

She made it enjoyable. She's a cool and creative teacher, who knows how to make thing easier when they aren't.
Kareema is an intentional teacher who pays close attention to those she works with - this means bolstering their strengths and giving them her most enthusiastic support and encouragement while building their skills.
I have especially appreciated her positive demeanor and outlook, so contagious and critical for learning and growing! Her training and years of experience truly come through in how she creates plans catered to each child's needs and is able to use well researched and effective teaching techniques.
So glad that Kareema continues to be passionate about education and learning!Ms. Dickens implements effective strategies for student learning. She is able to
demonstrate best practices for reading, writing, and numeracy skills across ability levels.
She is familiar with the needs of students who require additional supports for academic, social, and / or emotional needs. She can support parents’ efforts to continue learning strategies at home. In the 2014-15 school year, Ms. Dickens managed one student who had a 4
month medical leave of absence and returned with physical limitations. At the same time,
she supported a student with symptoms consistent with a psychological disorder. Ms. Dickens can support students’ learning on a individual level within the context of a typical classroom setting.I'm thrilled with the reading progress my son made with Marvelous Kidz. Katherine was incredibly informative in our initial meeting. She came highly recommended by the doctor who diagnosed our son with dyslexia and dysgraphia. She gave our son baseline assessments and explained everything we needed to know about where he was in his reading and writing and how she would help him to move forward. Katherine is incredibly patient and understanding and was very responsive to his needs. She created lesson plans that were tailored to him, responded in the moment, and adapting her lessons the next time she met with him as needed. She encouraged him and built up his self confidence. She even went as far as speaking to his third grade teacher about how to help him as well as all students with similar areas of need within the classroom. Because of her work with our son he has made great gains in his reading and writing abilities these past two years. We are eternally grateful we had the opportunity to work with her.
"Ms. Katherine works as a reading specialist/coach at the school where I work. I had known and worked with Ms. Katherine for several years in this capacity. Last year I had a student that struggled with reading. He had difficulties sounding out words. His decoding skills were slow and laborius. His reading level was 'A' which is way below First Grade reading level. I tried to help him for some time and when I saw no improvement, I referred him to Ms. Katherine. Ms. Katherine worked with him 3 times a week for 7 months. After 2 months, I started seeing a huge improvement in his reading. He was able to sound out words and read sentences. Ms. Katherine was able to develop and implement a remediation plan that focused on fundamentals and helped my student get to grade level. After 5 months, my student's reading level was 'J.' Ms. Katherine improved his self-confidence and instilled in him a love for reading. Now he is in Grade Two and every time I see him, he has a chapter book in his hand. Ms. Katherine's experience and knowledge base regarding instruction is impeccable. She is a valuable resource to both teachers and students in my school."
Ms. Katherine is beyond amazing! She took my DD8 with dyslexia from sounding out the word "the" to reading above her grade level in less then 2 years! She also taught my daughter cursive to help with her dysgraphia - and grammar (which my daughter is now better at then me). Katherine is patient, kind, knows when to push the kid to do their best, but also knows when to pull back and give the kid a break. She is a wonder woman and can't say enough good things about her! I would also like to add this has been all virtual since discovered during start of COVID, yes she was able to give a multi-sensory approach even though virtual!!!!
Katherine Dickens at Marvelous Kidz has a magical way of instructing and encouraging children, especially those struggling in the language arts discipline. Two years ago, we were fortunate enough to start working with Katherine when our child was diagnosed with multiple reading disabilities. Katherine created a safe and calm environment where our child has thrived, even during COVID. The confidence our child has gained through working with Katherine is immeasurable. Learning was a struggle for our child and reading often resulted in tears but working with Katherine made learning fun and I hear much laughter during their lessons. Through using the Orton Gillingham method, Katherine has helped our child move from 2 grade levels behind to one grade level ahead. I would recommend Katherine Dickens at Marvelous Kidz to anyone searching for an academic language therapist for their child.
Ms. Dickinson is truly amazing. My son had her for over two years. He loved her class. She and my son had a great connection. I love her style of teaching. She laughed with him and made learning fun. My son learned so much with her. The way she teaches, one can tell that she really enjoys what she does. If you are looking for a tutor, I would highly recommend Ms. Dickinson. She is the best!!!
