Typically, the students will have practice problems to work on. I ask him/her which they are having difficulty on and begin there. After going through a few sections of what they're learning, I circle back around to the beginning and see if they've understood it, or just memorized how to do similar problems. I have them work on the problem themselves to see if they've truly learned the topic.
