About Andrew

I hold a PhD in History of Art from the University of Edinburgh, where I taught for six years. I was a research fellow at the University of St Andrews, where I also taught and lectured in the School of Art History for four years. I have published articles and presented numerous papers on topics ranging from Renaissance sculpture to Baroque architecture and fresco painting to rituals and festivals. My monograph on the Jesuit artist Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709) is considered one of the most significant publications on Jesuit art in recent years. Prior to my career as an art historian, I was a set designer in theatre and opera, and I also worked in the field of interior design. I therefore come from a background that is nearly equal parts arts practice and history/theory.

I teach art history, specialising in topics in Italian art and architecture from the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries: Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Bernini, as well as wider surveys in Baroque art and culture, including Global Baroque. The works include painting, sculpture, monuments, architecture, ritual objects and ephemeral works, such as theatrical sets. My lessons are university-level, both for personal enrichment and to help you progress through your degree or prepare for an exam. I teach individual lessons as well as small groups. I also design tailor-made courses and sessions based on your needs and interests. Are you preparing for your term exams? Are there topics you aren't quite grasping, for which you need some additional help and practice? Are you preparing an essay or thesis that you need help planning or structuring? I have a lot of experience supervising and assessing student projects and writing assignments, and I am known for my detailed feedback. I can help you work towards that coveted first-class mark! My teaching integrates a good deal of historical context for understanding the society and culture in which works of art were commissioned and produced and the functions they served, be they religious, political or simply for private use. Each week I assign a reading set and design the lesson around a selection of works. I will give a short lecture, and then we will analyse two or three of the works together. We will then have a short discussion based on the week's reading. For homework I will ask you to analyse a work of art or a building that you have not seen, using the tools and knowledge you have acquired, and present it in the next class. I assess your progress in the course by means of short writing assignments, and the course will conclude with a written exam, similar to what you can expect at a major university.
