About
Many math teachers you may have known focused on learning education then went on to teach math based on what they knew about it. My route has been a bit non-traditional. First off, I spend a lot of time learning on my own. As a result, I took an interest in how people learn. This is one of the reasons I studied neuroscience and cognitive science! Much of what educators learn comes from the study of the mind, and I am constantly applying that knowledge. Secondly, I studied mathematics because I love it. I had a period where I really struggled, though! You see, I actually went a long time outside of the classroom, and had to reteach myself a lot of math in college. This process gave me new insights into how a first-time learner thinks. While teaching in a mixed learning environment—part lecture, part tutoring—I had the chance to test my ideas out. Over a period of months I came to a pretty solid model of figuring out each student’s unique needs and making the connections they require to advance in the subject!

I’ve spent a lot of time one-on-one with high school and college students teaching math. The one thing I’ve learned is that it takes some time to really sink into it, and get going. The way to really learn math is to get over the hurdles of self-consciousness and fear involved with the unfamiliar. In our time together I will focus on skills for doing math, while also covering the content you need to master. If you want to generate answers on your own, this is the way to do it!
