About Alfie
More informally now, I’m Alfie! I’m a first-year undergrad at university. I have not always been a naturally talented student and come from a lower-class background, so for students who feel as though they cannot improve (possibly as a result of their background) I understand the difficulty of studying at this age and how it can feel impossible, and I hope to be able to ease those feelings. Though tutoring will of course be focused mostly on academia, I hope to be able to develop a personable relationship with any student, something I feel is crucial to creating a comfortable environment of discussion on any topic. Beyond academia, I am incredibly interested in film and spend a lot of my free time trying to expand my cinematic taste, I also (as a bit of vice) enjoy gaming, and I like to relax by walking, reading or occasionally building Lego. I’ll admit that even in my free time my hobbies rarely escape my academic interests, but I would hope that such a quality does not diminish my appeal as a tutor.

In regard to tutorial sessions themselves, I can offer flexible lengths and dates as are needed over the summer period. An ideal tutorial for me would likely range between 40 minutes to an hour, in which I could assist in assignment completion (be that essays or lesser work) or aid in understanding of a given topic through planned out comprehension questions and discussion. I am more than willing to read and study the student’s topic in my own time so as to better help them. The age range for which I could best achieve this kind of tutoring would be between 14-18, as I believe this to be the level of maturity with which I could most easily mutually engage on a topic. On my qualifications, I have studied Philosophy, Classics and Film Studies at A-level, achieving grade A consistently in all three. At GCSE I achieved high grades in both English subjects, History, Geography, Drama and Religious Studies. As a result of this academic experience I feel very comfortable discussing and advising on any of these subjects, as well as adjacent humanities. Beyond just graded qualifications, I believe I am qualified to tutor based on my past formal and informal experience in assisting others with their education. During my college study I acted as help on essay writing in Film Studies and Classics for the year group below mine, alongside being a consistent aid in class towards the exam period. Additionally, a younger sibling of mine is homeschooled and I have informally assisted in their study for some time.
