About Sophia
I have been a performer since the age of 10 and a dance teacher since the age of 17. I was the youngest dance team member on my dance team (I was 12 and they were 14-16). I was fortunate to have Paige Porter as my dance teacher. I had a college level education because Paige Porter was a dance professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Due to this type of education, I was able to make it on the varsity cheerleading team in high school the first year I tried out. The year I joined the varsity cheer squad, we were asked to perform at half time at the Holiday Bowl and to walk in the Rose Bowl parade because the cheer team I got on was in the top ten for high school cheer teams in California at the time. I also was in show choir and had a mini step out piece since I was the strongest dancer. My senior year in high school, I was in honors choreography and dance. When I graduated, I was at the top of my class for choreography and performance. I then went to Ventura College and started to get my degree in choreography and dance. Unfortunately, due to health issues I was unable to complete school. I fortunately still got hired on as a hip-hop dance teacher at an after-school program for 1st-5th graders. I created different dances for each grade as well as fun dancing games. Since then, I have been an Ice-Skating coach as well as a high school substitute teacher. I love working with all ages and giving my expertise and creativity to the next generation of performers.

So I would do a warmup specific for the style of dance we are doing. We will stretch as well as get our heart rate up. Once that is completed, we will go into the basics for the style we are learning. Once that happens, I will create a fun pattern and play music that you will dance to. Depending on the age I will teach you how to hear and count the music properly based on the style of dance. I will show you the move and we will do it together. Then I will play the music and i will do it with you a couple of times and count out loud, so you know when to dance as well as where in the music. Next, I'll have you do it on your own as I count, and finally I will count you in and you will do it on your own. When it comes to dancing you just need a lot of repetition. Once you are doing the basic moves, I will come in with corrections to make it look better. We will then do a mini cool down and that will complete the lesson. Once you know the basics of dance, I will take suggestions on what kind of music/artist you want/have to learn a dance routine to. This is a fun and creative process and I want you to have some say in what music excites and inspires your creativity. If that is not an option, I will happily pick for you or be given music ahead of time.
