About Tony

Hi, I’m Tony — a second-generation tailor and owner of Mrs Ngoc Clothing Alterations in Richmond.
I’ve been sewing since my teenage years, originally taught by my late mother Ngoc, who built the business over 35 years. Today the workshop still runs from the same family home.

Alongside the alterations studio, I’m developing Sew n Tell — a late-night creative sewing space where people can learn at their own pace using professional machines, with guidance whenever they need it.

Joining me in the workspace is Kim Anh, a master tailor with over 30 years of experience. She specialises in pattern drafting, garment construction and complex alterations — the kind of knowledge normally learned through long apprenticeships.

Lessons take place in a fully equipped workshop with industrial machines, overlockers, pressing stations and every thread colour imaginable.

Whether you’re repairing your own clothes, learning alterations, drafting your first pattern or building garments from scratch, we teach sewing the way it’s actually practiced in a working tailor’s shop.
You can book one-on-one lessons, independent studio access, or immerse yourself in the full bespoke process.

Real tools. Real garments. Real skills.

I don't teach theory. I teach sewing.

Every session uses a real garment.
First you watch me do it.
Then you do it yourself.
No sketching for hours. No sitting at a desk. From the moment you arrive, you're behind a machine.

Two Ways to Learn

One-on-one tutoring — $50/hour
Personal lessons tailored to your goals. Learn alterations, repair your own clothes, build garments from scratch, or work toward a deadline.

Self-directed studio access — $30/hour
Work on your own projects using professional equipment. I'm here if you need guidance, but you set the pace.

Who comes here?

Anyone who wants to actually learn to sew.

I didn't know who Joel O'Keeffe was when he first walked through the door. He was just a bloke with clothes that needed fixing. He kept coming back.

Eventually he left this review:
"Tony is the hands down most passionate, genuine and kindest tailor I've ever met. He took over his dear Mum's business who worked right up until she passed away."

Turns out Joel is the singer and lead guitarist of Australian hard rock band Airbourne. But that's not why the review means something. It means something because he said it about the work. About the person behind it.

That's what we're about here.
From rock musicians to Richmond locals. Beginners to business owners.

Everyone starts the same way.
First lesson free. Come in and see.
The Seam Star Program — $500
For students who want a structured path, I created the Seam Star Program — a progressive system modelled on the traditional tailoring apprenticeship.

Bronze — Foundations of Alterations
8 guided sessions covering essential alteration skills such as hemming, waist adjustments and garment reshaping.

Each skill is taught twice:
first you watch, then you do it yourself.

Graduates receive a Seam Star certificate, a photo in our Somewhere Over the Rainbow thread hallway, and lifetime bobbin refills in any colour — two per visit.

Silver — Advanced Alterations
Invisible zips, linings, formalwear, structural changes and complex repairs.

Gold — Pattern Making & Construction
Drafting, grading, sleeves, collars, interfacing and garment construction using professional equipment.

S-Tier — Black Belt Seam Star
Bespoke garment making and specialised construction.

The final test is simple:
You bring someone you love. We both make them a garment. They choose the one that fits best — without knowing who made which.
If they choose yours, you graduate.

S-Tier graduates receive a framed certificate featuring a portrait of Mrs Ngoc, along with an embroidered black belt with Vietnamese characters — yours to keep for life.

First lesson free — no commitment.
Come in, see the workshop, try the machines, and we'll work out where you start.
