About Marcello
Multi-award-winning Marcello Cardillo is a drummer and composer from Naples, Italy. He has performed alongside some of the world's most renowned musicians and he is currently living in New York City, where he regularly performs in some of the city’s most historic venues. Watching his father, Marcello started playing the drums around the age of 5. By the age of 14 he was already playing with some of the most important names of the music scene of Naples, and very soon all-around Italy, collecting at a very young age national and international recognition. At 18 he moved to the Netherlands to study at the Conservatory of Amsterdam where he got his Bachelor and his first Master degree. During those years he got the chance to play with names such as: John Clayton, Wycliffe Gordon, Bob Mintzer, Vince Mendoza, Jesse van Ruller, Riccardo del Fra, Alex Sipiagin, Ben van Gelder, and many others. After spending one semester in exchange from Amsterdam at The New School of New York in 2019, where he studied with Masters such as Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Andrew Cyrille, and Rodney Green; Marcello came back to the big apple in 2020, being awarded a scholarship to start his second Master degree at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. Here he studied with Kendrick Scott, John Riley and Miguel Zenon. Soon Marcello got into New York City’s vibrant jazz scene playing in historic clubs such as Smalls, Dizzy’s, The Django, Nublu, Café Bohemia, Minton’s Playhouse etc. Notable collaborations during this period are with legendary bassist Buster Williams, Steve Wilson, Stacy Dillard, Logan Richardson and Fabrizio Bosso, to name a few. His latest album “Portrait of a Moment”, co-led by pianist Tommaso Perazzo, features Buster Williams on bass and it is about to be released in 2025.

When I was fairly young already my peers were asking me for advice and insights on how to play and how to practice more efficiently. The skill of communicating and sharing the knowledge has always been with me since the early days. I was developing as a teacher as I was developing as a drummer. My teaching experience is vast and varied. When I was studying in the Amsterdam Conservatory other fellow students asked me to teach them, and from then on, I started to have a studio of a vast variety of students, from the peers, kids, and adults. There I discovered my passion and natural predisposition to teaching. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge, my skills and my vision to my students. I love teaching and I have been fortunate to be able to keep doing it successfully to this day because people appreciate my way of delivering the information. Simple and Clear. I have taught children and seniors coming from many different backgrounds, and I do not have preferences of age or preparation, every student is a different world and every world is unique and precious. I’ve taught in every environment possible, from institutions to private studio, from group classes to one-on-one, developing a well thought method and communication skills to be able to deliver the knowledge to every different kind of student, achieving the student’s improvement and blossoming of their musicianship quickly and effectively. I hope I will be able to keep sharing my knowledge and help my students, and I am sure I will do it with the same passion and dedication I’ve had so far.

I've been studying drums with my Marcello for almost a year now, and to be honest, the improvement has been palpable under almost every aspect. What really made the difference wasn't just the exercises or the material — it was the attention to detail. Every single thing we worked on had a purpose behind it, and that kind of care is what allowed me to build a solid foundation first, before trying to push for more.
And that foundation is exactly what let me reach new levels with timing, precision, and sound on the instrument. It's about knowing why something sounds good, what makes it feel right, and being able to control it. Before this, I was playing; now I feel like I'm actually understanding what I'm playing, and that's a completely different thing.
If you're thinking about starting or you've been stuck for a while and feel like you're not getting anywhere, to be sure, this is the kind of guidance that gets you unstuck. You're not just gonna get a bunch of generic exercises — you're gonna get someone who actually pays attention to where you are and where you need to go. Almost a year in and I'm still finding new things to work on and improve, and that, to me, is the best sign that this is working.I’ve been studying drums with Marcello and couldn’t recommend him more. He’s an incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and patient teacher who knows how to adapt to each student’s needs. What really sets him apart is his empathy and availability—he always takes the time to explain concepts clearly and makes sure I truly understand. His deep musical expertise comes through in every lesson, but he also creates a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere that makes learning both effective and enjoyable. If you’re looking for a drum teacher who combines skill, passion, and genuine care for his students, Marcello is the one.
Marcello has taught me how to play the drums for the past four years. He was able to start me with the core fundamentals, first teaching me how to hold the drum sticks properly with different techniques and from there he has elevated my ability to play the drums to a higher level than I thought I would ever be able to achieve. I have since been able to join multiple Jazz ensembles and play multiple concerts. He has taught me how to play multiple songs, how to sight read, how to solo over songs, and much more. Whether you are a complete beginner or have been playing for years, Marcello can teach you well and elevate your level of playing.
I’ve known Marcello for years and he is one of the most exciting drummers to watch in NYC right now, and his teaching reflects that same energy. What sets him apart is his ability to make complex techniques feel accessible, whether you're a beginner or more advanced. His deep understanding of rhythm and ease for breaking down concepts create a learning environment that’s both supportive and engaging. Every lesson feels tailored, and his passion for drumming is contagious. If you’re looking to grow as a drummer, Marcello is the real deal.
Marcello is an extraordinary drummer and educator. His deep knowledge of drumming, both as a performer and a teacher, sets him apart on an international level. Having taught and performed all over the world, he brings a wealth of experience to his lessons, making him an outstanding instructor. His ability to adapt to different learning styles, combined with his technical expertise and musicality, makes studying with him an enriching and inspiring experience. If you’re looking for a top-tier drum teacher in New York, Marcello is the perfect choice!
Great teacher and awesome musician! I highly recommend taking lessons from him, he’s been very helpful to me and I’m sure he would be to a lot of people!
