About Gabriel

Gabriel is a Colombian - American independent documentary filmmaker and film editor based out of New York, NY.

As a post-production specialist and a genuine fan of documentary films and their productions, Gabriel has had extensive experience working as a Lead Editor, Assistant Editor and Archivist for various documentary oriented production companies and independent filmmakers. He is currently a Video Editor at The Garden Creative, a non-fiction full service media production company that produces independent documentaries, branded storytelling content, and paid advertising. The companies clients include T Brand Studios from the New York Times, Capital One, Geico, National Geographic, PBS, IBM, The Weather Chanel, and many more. Here, Gabriel works with producers, directors, colorists, sound mixers, and animators to craft the best story possible for the companies clients. Most recently, he was the Lead Editor of three separate series for the online education company Wondrium, a project that lasted just over 6 months.

Before working at the Garden, he was the Lead Video Editor at the Center for Online and Digital Learning (CODL) at Syracuse University, where he designed a comprehensive workflow for 20 editors and graphic designers. During his time in this position, he was invited to be a guest speaker and workshop visiting artist for freshman, senior and graduate level film courses to discuss the many intricacies of film and sound editing.

However, following the modest success he has found as a director with his short documentary film, STANDING ROCK, he continues to collaborate with other production companies, filmmakers, artists and non-profits by offering them a variety of services depending on their needs. He also continues to work on his own films, two of which are in the production and post-production stages.

Premier Pro ONLY. For beginner and intermediate editors.

I am not here to teach you the theory behind cuts (although I am more than happy to have that conversation with you). The way you string clips, graphics, sound effects and music together is personal, and my goal is not to change your voice. I am here to enhance it by making sure that when you sit down and edit, you stay in the creative pocket. To do so, I will teach you how to set up a project, how to stay organized, shortcuts, customizations, and everything else related on making you a faster editor. The last thing anyone wants to do when they sit down and edit, is to spend 30 minutes trouble shooting a problem. A fast editor, is a purely creative editor.

As a beginner, my goal is to turn you into an intermediate. We will start with the fundamentals. How to organize your footage in bins, and where. How to set up a project. The different stages of assembly, and what to do in what order to guarantee a speedier assembly. How to export, why use a certain format over another, and how to upload (trust me, a detail that could be trickier than one thinks!).

As an intermediate, my goal is to turn you into a pro. At this stage in your filmmaking career, you should have more concrete questions on what you would like to improve on/ set up. This could be, getting more comfortable with plugins. Understanding hardware limitations. How to backup footage (local and cloud based formats). How to work with other filmmakers, editors, colorists, and sound mixers, and how to incorporate other programs into your workflow. All of this with the intention of getting you better prepared to work in a more professional setting, regardless if it is in a freelance, corporate, or production company setting.
