I have known Matthew for seven years, and he is a very good family friend. He is a warm, kind person, whose cleverness, musicality and wonderful gift for language are balanced by gentleness and a great sense of humour. He is enormously well liked by friends and colleagues, spanning a broad social range. I really value his feedback on my own writing. I am a professional writer, teacher and academic. I have held teaching and research fellowships at several Oxford and Cambridge colleges, and I have published widely. But I still value Matthew’s feedback on things I have written. With his long experience of screenwriting, he sees immediately how phrasing, tone and structure can be improved, and he makes me see it, too. He is always inspiring and makes learning fun. He is approachable and kind, clever and enthusiastic, patient and responsible, imaginative, musical and really funny. He is always learning things himself, or building on what he already knows; and his flair for teaching springs from his infectious love for learning.

I’ve known Matthew for almost 10 years. In spite of his enormous talent, he remains one of the most humble people I know. This humility – coupled with endless patience, wonderful sense of humour and an easy-going but purposeful nature all combine to make him a truly terrific teacher. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough.
