About Leticia
I believe that teaching is a rewarding profession that faces many challenges however I believe that these challenges are far outweighed by the many rewards. From previous experience volunteering in primary schools, I understand that there are many responsibilities as a teacher, which can go beyond the classroom.
My first experience whilst at high school gave me an insight into teaching in primary schools. Volunteering as a classroom assistant at Walkergate Primary my role was to help mange and interact with the children. This experience opened my eyes and gave me my first insight into teaching. More recently I gained experience at Byker Primary School, where my role volunteering allowed me the opportunity of planning lessons. I found that this involved many things to be considered, including health and safety. I understand that this is an important part of teaching and allows you to have a structure to your lessons. However, it is also important to have a backup option. For example, whilst at Byker Primary I was informed they had ran out of a material that I had planned to use for my activity. From this experience I learned to take precautions for the rest of my lesson plans. By observing other teachers both within the classroom and around the school allowed me to see how they handle primary school life with the children.
I understand that teaching involves a lot of independent work, however, teamwork is an important part of teaching as well. This is well developed in the study art through your own individual projects, crits, organising exhibitions and presentations. Through my studies of art I am able to developed ideas through a creative process. I understand the role of a teacher is many as a; role model, mentor, authority figure and a safe heaven, just to mention a few. From my experiences I have gained an understanding of how to deal with children within a school setting. It has also given me the opportunity to learn how to deal with situations when plans don’t work out the way you had initially thought.
I understand that children within schools come from many different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities. As my own background roots are Angolan, I have the ability to speak Portuguese as well as English. Being bilingual enables me to have a better understanding of the needs required towards children whose first language is not English. This could also help communication with a child who may struggle to understand due to these factors.
