About Lila

Art has always been at the heart of everything I do—both as an educator and as an artist myself. I believe in the transformative power of creativity, not just as a means of self-expression but as a vital tool for confidence-building, problem-solving, and personal growth. With years of experience teaching Art, including as a former Head of Department, I have worked extensively with young people of all abilities, with a particular focus on students with SEND and SEMH needs. My role as a specialist outreach tutor has given me the privilege of guiding students who struggle with traditional classroom settings, helping them to discover their artistic voice in a way that feels safe, empowering, and truly their own. Beyond teaching, I also coach professional artists in how to market themselves and turn their passion into a sustainable business. Whether working with aspiring young creatives or established artists, my approach is always the same: to nurture originality, encourage experimentation, and provide the tools needed to thrive in the art world. I am passionate about making Art accessible to everyone and fostering an environment where students—regardless of their challenges—can create, grow, and succeed.

About the lesson

I take a creative and compassionate approach to teaching, and am sensitive to the fact that the classroom environment can be distracting and difficult to learn in. I understand the importance of passion and curiosity when it comes to learning, and I aim to make lessons memorable and fun. This way, I encourage my pupils to develop a deep and genuine interest which will carry beyond their exams and into their life beyond school. I usually consider the first lesson with a new pupil as both a chance for us to get to know each other, and a way of assessing where the pupil is at with the subject at hand. I am careful to learn as much as I can about each student, and modify my lesson plans accordingly to suit them individually. This is through setting tasks, creative activities and engaging in dialogue; asking specific questions to the pupil which might help them to join dots and reach conclusions on their own. I set creative challenges which help my pupils to better express and articulate themselves. When it comes to exam-focused tuition, I am rigorous with covering curriculum, ensuring that pupils have a clear understanding of all aspects of the exam. I plan ahead and aim to reinforce any other lessons they may be receiving, so pupils can feel more confident in the classroom. I am especially good at teaching students to cope with anxiety, which I have had to overcome myself.

During the pandemic, I wanted my 9-year-old to have an online tutor to help engage him - as he was being turned off by the online material his school was providing. Lila is a wonderful tutor. We hired her to help my 10 year old daughter with her English lessons, as she is one of the youngest in her class and was struggling to keep up with the other children.

Lila's lessons totally transformed her confidence. She is now keeping up with her class (and has even won some classroom awards for her poems!)

Within the first lesson Lila helped my daughter to write her own story, and now my daughter is enjoying reading much more advanced books, and writing stories and poetry all the time!
