About Joel
Hello!
I am an experienced multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer.
After teaching myself by ear as a kid, I studied jazz piano from my teenage years and classical piano at undergraduate level.
I am a professional session player on all of my instruments and have toured and performed at major venues and festivals internationally.
I am currently studying for a part-time Master’s degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, after graduating with a 1st class Bachelor's degree from Goldsmiths.
At this point, I engage with a very wide range of music, and I love to feel like I am learning all the time through practice and exploration. I am very motivated to inspire this curiosity in my students, since it's something I've gotten so much out of!

My main aim as a teacher is to keep my students enthusiastic about music. I believe people make their best music when they enjoy what they are creating.
Typically my lessons would focus on learning repertoire, focussing in on resultant technical challenges, and discussing the theoretical elements of the music we're studying (in as much depth as is interesting to the student).
I also like to extrapolate techniques and theoretical ideas that can equip students for improvisation, composition or any other aspect of music making that they are interested in pursuing beyond performing repertoire.
I believe the traditional grade syllabus can be taken advantage of to all these ends as well, and enjoy a structured approach to lessons as much as an intuitive one.
Most importantly, I want my students to have fun, and to feel curious, confident, and empowered to express themselves creatively through their music-making!
I am happy travelling to students or teaching from my home in Honor Oak Park. I also offer online lessons. Feel free to get in touch about what works best for you and we can figure it out between us.
