About Kiersten

Kiersten's fine art lessons focus on two central ideas: 1. Helping students understand and refine excellent technique, and 2.Cultivating, encouraging, and polishing each student's individual style. Kiersten incorporates concepts and exercises based on the atelier, a classical French program that teaches practical, time-tested methods used by master artists throughout history. Lessons usually follow a specific schedule, one that Kiersten has adjusted and perfected through the years. Each class begins with an introduction, followed by an exercise or art game that helps students to warm up and focus on practicing a skill without the pressure of learning while trying to create a finished piece. Next, Kiersten gives a lecture-usually with a slideshow of examples- and/or does a demonstration for the students(s). After this, students work on an assigned project, which is often taught in a step-by-step manner, and finally, students are given time to work on an individually chosen piece under instruction. Kiersten emphasizes spiral learning, learning through repetition, moving forward at a sustainable pace, challenging students to reach full potential, and teaching students the little-known, highly effective methods of the masters. She is also very passionate about tailoring lessons to best fit each student's unique learning style, needs, and interests.

I especially love it when a student who has been working to master a new concept or technique gets that magical "Aha!" moment, and he or she jumps levels. It never ceases to ignite a sense of excitment, joy, and fulfillment! When I ca be a part of helping someone else achieve his or her creative dreams, life is wonderful and I know I'm carrying out my purpose.

Kiersten Sundberg is a professional fine artist and art teacher trained in the classical tradition of apprenticeship. She apprenticed for three and a half years under master artist and art teacher Helen Kleczynski, a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and a member of the IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies) Master Circle. From Helen, Kiersten received a thorough education in drawing, painting, running an art studio, framing, showing art, and art networking.

After her apprenticeship to Helen Kleczynski, Kiersten studied under internationally-recognized artist and teacher Thimgan Hayden, who has won both national and international awards and exhibits work in Italy as well as the United States. Thimgan was classically trained at the Angel Academy of Art and the Florence Academy of Art. While working with Thimgan, Kiersten studied the atelier, a rigorous, centuries-old French program designed to train artists to represent what they observe from life with great accuracy and elegance, in the style of the old masters.

Kiersten currently owns and operates Master’s Apprentice, which offers quality fine art classes and workshops, as well as commissioned original paintings by Kiersten. For the past seven years, she has been teaching classes in all painting and drawing media in a wide range of artistic styles. Her classes combine time-tested, skill-building learning methods with individually tailored lessons designed to encourage students to discover their own preferred styles, media, and subjects. She loves Jesus and has a passion for classical, representational art.
