About Kathy
I have experience tutoring English and Writing privately to students of all ages and levels. I will design individual study plans to fit your needs and availability. I am also more than happy to provide counseling for college entrance essays and interviews. As an alumna of Harvard College (B.A. Neuroscience), I remember very well how daunting these two aspects of the application can be. I will break down the preparation and writing process into manageable steps.
In addition to English, I also speak German at a near-native level (C2) and can provide tutoring for those looking to learn another language. I am currently working towards a master's degree in philosophy at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany.
As an avid language learner myself, I know how it can sometimes be helpful when teachers explain things by pointing out differences between one's native language and the target language. To this end, I have several other languages to aid the learning process: I speak Chinese (Mandarin) natively, Spanish (B2), and have just begun to learn French (A1).
My services cover the following subjects: English Language, Writing, Editing (anything from college admissions essays to academic articles), German Language, and Philosophy.
My rates will vary from $50 - $150 depending on the subject matter, difficulty of the material, and the frequency with which we would meet.
I love getting to know my students and seeing them grow--there's nothing more rewarding than helping another person develop the ability to express themselves in words.
My first tutoring job was as an online English tutor at a small start-up that served mostly Chinese students overseas. I received training and teaching materials from the company, and then I also helped design a writing course. I currently work at a college admissions consulting agency.
Furthermore, I also attended two week-long teaching workshops at the University of Pennsylvania: Teaching Assistant Training Program of Upenn and Workshop an Teaching and Learning in Philosophy from the American Association for Philosophy Teachers.
I also taught Violin to 3rd-5th graders through Play On, Philly!, a non-profit bringing classical music to underserved communities in Philadelphia.

For language students:
I will use the first session to learn about your goals and previous experiences: Are you learning a language for school or work? To pass a particular exam? Then, I will get a sense of your background knowledge and how much of the language you already know. Once I have a sense of your knowledge, we will talk about how much time you have available to study and practice outside of our lessons. Then I will draw up a timeline to make sure you reach your learning goals on time.
For writing students:
The best way is to dive right in. I usually ask these students to send some sort of writing sample before the first lesson. It doesn't need to be long--even just a paragraph is fine. If you don't have one and can't think of anything to write about, I can also give you a topic.
For those of you who would like help with the college admissions essays, you can simply send anything you've already written. If you had writer's block before you've even begun to answer the application questions, don't worry! Bring them to our first session and we can brainstorm together. We'll come up with a schedule together as well to make sure everything is finished well before your deadline.
For those of you who would like interview coaching, it's good to have both some prepared answers as well as some practice answering questions spontaneously. We will work on both.
I also have experience providing english editing for academic articles. Rates for this service will depend on the length and amount of editing required.
My younger students included individuals between 8 - 18 years old, but I have also taught older students (25-40) who were planning to continue their studies in or move to the US or UK.
Make sure your teacher is a good fit for YOU. It's important that your teacher is someone who will take into account how you learn and will adjust their teaching style to accommodate your educational needs.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about your favorite teachers: what were they like? What did they do in their that was particularly helpful for you? And of course, don't forget to recall your least favorite teachers -- it's also important to know what really doesn't work for you!

Any standardized test preparation: $50/hour. For the TOEFL, I would recommend that you are at least at a low intermediate level (CEFR B1) before taking exam preparation courses, otherwise an intensive course that focuses on grammar and vocabulary (see option 1 for English below) would be more helpful.
Tutoring for young children and adolescents to improve grades: $30/hour. Please note that I am currently abroad and can only provide online tutoring, therefore a parent/guardian will need to send me material that their child is learning in school so that our sessions can be tailored to the school's education requirements.
For English classes, you an choose from several options:
1. Intensive (structured on a 2-month basis):
*This option is highly recommended for individuals who need to improve by a certain level by a specific deadline, are preparing for academic settings, or are working towards taking the TOEFL.
In this option, we will first have a diagnostic meeting so I can get a sense of your current language abilities. We will also discuss your learning goals, how often you would like to meet, and how much time you have to practice outside of our classes.
Then, I will draw up a 2-month syllabus with specific learning goals (grammar topics, vocabulary, etc.) as a guideline. After the first 2 months, I will provide an updated syllabus for the following 2 months based on your progress. We can continue this process until you have reached the level you wanted to achieve through lessons.
Here is an example:
Each week will involve
-1-2 sessions to learn & practice grammar & vocabulary (1 hour each)
-Reading, listening, grammar, and transcription assignments
-1-2 sessions (30 minutes each) for speaking and pronunciation
As this option is highly tailored to individual needs, the price will vary depending on how often you would like to have sessions and how much time you have for assignments between sessions. Generally, you can expect a charge of $30/ 1-hour session and a weekly charge for assignment preparation. I will provide you will a detailed list of charges after the first diagnostic meeting and before creating the syllabus, so you will have the opportunity to review the full costs and request any changes before agreeing to take the class. You should expect to dedicate about 4-6 hours per week.
2. Cumulative learning: $30/1-hour lesson
In this option, we will have weekly sessions that build on each other based on the grammar, vocabulary, and language use skills you would like to improve. This is a less structured, more relaxed version of option 1 without assignments between sessions. Recommended for individuals who want to improve their English, but don't have a specific timeline by when they need to meet certain language requirements. Appropriate for any level.
3. Conversation Practice: $30/1-hour session
In this option, I will prepare topics for conversation practice intended to cover English usage across a range of situations for every session; you can let me know if there are specific topics you'd like to discuss. I will correct your grammar and pronunciation throughout the conversation. This option is suitable for individuals with at least a low intermediate level of English and would like to improve their conversational skills at a relaxed pace. 30 minute sessions are also available for this option.
For individuals at an advanced level (TOEFL section scores 25-30, CEFR Level C1), sessions can be specifically tailored for a particular professional setting or offered at a lower price for general conversation practice. Please let me know if you would like to discuss these options.
