J. Laurence Burt, M.Ed., is a dedicated educator that thrives on seeing people excel and achieve greatness. Mr. Burt was born into a family of educators. His mother, a teacher of 29 years, and his sister, a teacher of six years, always share their insights and professionalism about the craft of teaching.

He graduated in 2001 with a B.A. in English from Morehouse College and a master's degree in Educational Administration and Supervision. He has taught at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels for the past seven years, and he has founded programs for schools in the Atlanta area.

His knack for connecting with his students and parents is phenomenal, and he uses these connections to create lasting bonds that have helped many of his students through high school and on into college. With a healthy dose of humor, structure, innovation, and the ability to relate to youth and adults on their level while maintaining authority, Mr. Burt has broken through to many of his students in the past and challenged them beyond their own boundaries to success. The result: students at high skill levels stay challenged and students at low skill levels improve. Mr. Burt prides himself on the lasting relationships he has formed from tutoring over the years, and he continues to reach out to improve the state of learning, education, and socialization in the community.

I took my love for storytelling and shaping young minds and just ran with it. Let's face it, it takes a village, and our kids need help! I just decided to stand in the achievement gap in the attempts to close it.

About the lesson

Getting a diagnostic and building a relationship are always the first steps when greeting new clients. We want to know what really matters to the parent and child by setting goals. Then, coach the student into success with subject area expertise, humor, confidence, study skills, and proven standards.

Our students leave with a different perspective on what they are expected to learn and their ability to retain it -- a major confidence booster when they reenter the classroom.

Be open to having fun while being challenged. Make sure you ask the teacher everything you want to know, but be sure you tell them all about what you struggle with. The more you tell them, the more they can help.
