About Cara
My previous experience includes 3 years as the Managing Deputy Editor at The Economist Magazine's online website, (concealed information) In addition, my Master's Degree is in Education. I have worked with all levels of students on academic assignments, as well as completing college application essays.
The individual attention I provide as a tutor helps to foster quality work with my help, as well as skills that will remain with the students long after our sessions.
I love helping students achieve their best. Through unique lessons I am able to harness their interests as a way to teach them. In addition to seeing them master academic information, the transformation from low self confidence to complete confidence is extremely rewarding.
I earned a Master's in Elementary Education and then proceeded to teach Elementary School as well as tutor at various levels.
I was a Managing Deputy Editor as well an Elementary school teacher. In addition, I have been tutoring since 2004 across all subject areas.

My introductory tutoring session includes introducing myself to the student, sharing a little about myself, my experience and why I love tutoring. Then, I allow the student to share about himself or herself. We talk about academic strengths and weaknesses and then I assess the skills we are targeting.
I have worked with all different types of students. My goal is always to help students improve and gain confidence in the areas they are having the most difficulty thriving in.
Perhaps one of the biggest tips I can give a student is to make sure there is a connection between the tutor and student. If the student dislikes their tutor it will be less enjoyable.
In addition, professional experience in the area you are being tutored in is key.
I take great pride in motivating students that may not necessarily like the subject area of English. Recently, I was working with a middle school aged boy who was experiencing difficulty with reading and was resistant to writing. In getting to know him and his likes, I discovered that he loved comic books and superheroes. Not only did I research to find an amazing new book series that grabbed his attention but we also used his love of art to spark his writing ideas.
Introducing him to the book series in written and audible form allowed him to gain reading and comprehension skills. To foster independence and an interest in reading I guided his parents to allow him to read to himself sometimes and out loud sometimes. In his own words he said, "This makes me feel like a real reader".
In regards to his writing, through the use of his own drawings, he began to outline a story. We worked on the outline together and slowly he began outlining new portions on his own. We have yet to compose a full book from the outline but this progress alone has me feeling proud and fond of my student!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should think about the areas they are struggling the most in.

My daughter felt very comfortable and at ease from the first tutoring lesson. Each tutoring session was professional, gave parent feedback, and fun to my child. Most importantly, my daughters’ skill level improved immensely. I highly recommend the Writing Corner!
