About Allison

Hello there!

I am a former public school teacher with 17 years experience. I taught high school English for 9 years, followed by middle school English for 8. I had to leave the classroom due to health reasons (and not being able to teach in ways that I thought were appropriate for my students). But I miss connecting with students and helping them improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills in unique and interesting ways.

If you are looking for an instructor who is an expert at helping students master reading, writing, critical thinking, and/or English as a second language, look no further, as I am your person. I am especially proficient at teaching reading AND writing.

Having instructed over 2000 students in my career, I have countless testimonials detailing how I helped so many of them achieve success in their adult lives.

Perfect! Five stars for Allison at SchoolSmart! She assisted our 11th grader with their AP Language course. Allison possesses an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, including the various rhetorical devices, essay structures, and critical analysis techniques required to excel in the course.
She utilized both Zoom sessions and email communications. Both worked very well. She was flexible and responsive when it came to scheduling.
Allison’s feedback and guidance on the writing assignments were invaluable. They provided constructive criticism, highlighting areas for improvement while also acknowledging strengths.

Ms. Allison Maynard is everything you could ask for in a tutor! She's sharp, knowledgeable, engaging, lighthearted, playful, and adept at keeping kids on task. She has decades of experience as an educator in the State of California making her well-versed in her profession. Allison has helped my family tremendously, stepping in to help us after I pulled my 3rd grader from public school quite unexpectedly.

Allison stepped in at such a crucial time, providing much needed support, and helping me supplement a homeschool program I wasn't prepared to lead. She saved me in so many ways and has developed a special bond with my son who loves working with her. Her one-on-one lessons incorporate vocabulary, spelling, writing, comprehension and critical thinking. She also gave me the invaluable gift of her School Smart Program, which gives parents like me the tools they need to teach effectively while helping their kids learn how to learn! Her modules cover everything from following directions, handwriting, interactive notebooks and organization, to research, annotation, and critical thinking. Effective tools in a bite size, digestible format!

The current state of our education system is abysmal, particularly here in Oregon where we rank as one of the lowest in the nation with 60% of students not at reading level. 😳 Two million families removed their kids from public schools across the nation since 2020. More and more of us are leaving the failing, antiquated model where independence, creativity, and genius go to die. We are seeking innovative alternatives that make education exciting, engaging, useful, and fun. We are homeschooling, worldschooling, and unschooling. And Allison’s program can really help parents, giving us the tools we need to educate our kids on our own or even supplement for what they are lacking in traditional school. It’s been such an invaluable gift to us. I highly recommend it and I highly recommend working with Ms. Maynard!
