About Samir

I have been playing Tabla for almost 60 years. During these years, I have performed as a soloist and with other outstanding musicians of Indian and western traditions. I also on the faculty at a few reputed institutions in the USA. I have authrored two significant books on Indian music - A Study of Tabla and Music of India. Many of my students are performers of very high calibre. I have always been careful to pass on the most authentic information mainting and making the traditon relevant to the contemporary. The location of the lessons is in the heart of New York City and the setting is perfect for such pursuit.

I enjoy sharing whatever I have gathered from my lessons, practice and maturity. I enjoy seeing the interest and growth in my students.

I have lived and studied in Kolkata (Calcutta) for over 42 years under the guidance of Gurus Amalesh Chatterjee and Shyamal Bose. I have performed with musicians like Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Bhimsen Joshi, Jasraj and many others. I teach at a few universities.

About the lesson

There will be a short period of orientation - to give time and opportunity for familiarization. This could usually take two to three lessons. During this time introductory lessons with basic techniques and information is passed on. Then compositional study begins.

Musicians and non-musicians, male and female of different nationalities and ages.

In education a proper chemistry between the teacher and the student is essential. The teacher should have the proper knowledge, expertise, patience, love, care and passion to share. So, even if it may not be the most convenient option, please do not compromise on quality.
