About Ankur

I have a PhD in Computational Mechanics and regularly teach and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students through one-to-one sessions. I have worked with students from universities across the US, Europe, Singapore, Australia, and India. I adapt my teaching to each student and try to make difficult concepts easier to understand and apply. I also focus on building a strong foundation so that students can approach problems with greater confidence and independence.

Over the years, I have taught students from leading universities around the world, including Imperial College London (UK), the University of Glasgow (UK), RWTH Aachen University (Germany), the National University of Singapore, the University of Sydney (Australia), Rutgers University (USA), the University of Toronto (Canada), and the University of Pretoria (South Africa), among many others.

The courses and modules I teach usually involve a strong mix of conceptual understanding and problem-solving. I focus on connecting the underlying physics with the relevant mathematics and calculus, helping students see how the ideas fit together and develop a deeper, more intuitive understanding of the subject.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My subject area primarily includes engineering mechanics, solid mechanics, thermal sciences, mathematics, and related engineering topics. I developed an interest in these subjects during my undergraduate studies. I have always been a curious learner and enjoyed understanding how physical systems work and how mathematical principles can be used to explain real-world phenomena. Over time, this curiosity developed into a deeper interest in studying and teaching these subjects.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach, and why?

My greatest motivation comes from the students themselves. I genuinely enjoy sharing ideas, explaining concepts, and helping students overcome difficulties. It is very fulfilling to see a student move from confusion to clarity and gradually become confident enough to solve problems independently. Those moments make teaching deeply rewarding for me.
  • How does your work help society?

Education helps create knowledgeable, confident, and capable individuals. Through my work, I help students build strong foundations in mathematics and engineering, develop problem-solving abilities, and learn to think independently. These students may later use their knowledge to solve practical problems and contribute to engineering, technology, research, and society as a whole.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who would you think of, and why?

I do not have one specific role model. Over the years, I have learned from many teachers, lecturers, professors, colleagues, and even my students. Each person has a unique way of explaining concepts, approaching problems, or interacting with learners. I try to observe the best qualities in different people and incorporate those qualities into my own teaching and continuous learning.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Outside teaching, I enjoy travelling, listening to music, and watching football. Travelling allows me to experience different places and cultures, while music helps me relax and recharge. I also enjoy following football whenever I have some free time.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

One of the most rewarding experiences in teaching is seeing a student who initially believes that a subject is too difficult gradually become comfortable with it. I have worked with students who were hesitant even to begin solving a problem because they lacked confidence. With patience, regular practice, and step-by-step guidance, they eventually began solving similar problems independently. Seeing that transformation, from self-doubt to confidence, is one of the reasons I continue to enjoy teaching.
